2005-2006 Bundesliga

Year in Review

2005-2006 TEAM BY TEAM REVIEW

Köln

After a strong season in the shadows of Bamberg and ALBA Berlin, it was Cologne who emerged as German Bundesliga champion under 1st year head coach Sasa Obradovic.  The teams 21-9 3rd place finish only set the stage for a tremendous playoff run led by Playoff MVP Immanuel McElroy whose buzzer beater in the championship series will be remembered for many seasons to come.  With their strong season in 2005-2006, Cologne qualifies for Euroleague competition this season!

Berlin

A fantastic season foiled by injuries in the playoffs and a team of destiny in Cologne, ALBA Berlin can take pride in their tremendous 26-4 regular season and first place finish.  ALBA also won the German Cup in 2005-2006.  A season ending neck injury to Mamic hurt the team early but did not disturb their run.  MVP Jovo Stanojevic and PG Hollis Price starred consistenly for this traditional German power and Henrik Rodl and staff were excellent all year.

Bamberg

Under outstanding German National team head coach Dirk Bauerman, Bamberg made history in 2005-2006.  Bamberg enjoyed the best Euroleague performance of any Bundesliga team in history.  Their successful play also drove them to a great 24-6 2nd place finish in the regular season.  Unfortunately, like rival ALBA Berlin, injuries shortcircuited their playoff chances when fantastic guard Demond Mallet went down with a knee injury late last year.  A deep team with strong veteran play, Bamberg was terrific in 2005-2006.

Bonn

Behind Bundesliga scoring leader PG Andrew Wisniewski, Bonn wore their PINK jerseys with pride in a strong 16-14 season good enough for 7th place and a playoff appearance. Unfortunately, the BIG BRAWL in Bamberg left Bonn with several key players suspended dooming their upset chances in the post season.  Overall, Michael Koch could be pleased with his teams performance in 2005-2006.

B'haven

Despite being an "Aufsteigger" playing in their first Bundesliga season, Bremerhaven performed anything but like rookies.  Head Coach Sarunas Sakalauskas was named Bundesliga Coach of the Year and C Darren Fenn enjoyed a tremendous year.  A strong 19-11 4th place finish and great playoff run highlighted the teams season.  Bremerhaven outlasted Artland 3-2 in the 1st round before

Dragons

A team that enjoyed a great 2005-2006, Head Coach Chris Fleming guided his team to a quality 17-13 5th place finish and a strong performance in the playoffs despite falling to Bremerhaven in 5 games 2-3 in the 1st round.

O'burg

Although injuries plagued the talented Oldenburg squad, veteran Head Coach Don Beck rallied his troops for a fantastic playoff push that had powerful ALBA Berlin on the ropes.  Tyron McCoy excelled in the post season but Oldenburg fell in a decisive 5th game losing the 1st Round series 2-3.  The 15-15 8th place mark is deceiving due to all the injuries the team delt with.

L'burg

Ludwigsburg started strong and maintained their run to a quality year and 6th place finish at 16-14.  Led by Jerry Green and Milan Goljovic, Head Coach Silvano Poropat's team made a second playoff appearance losing to eventual champion Cologne in the first round.

Gießen

After a tremendous run into the playoffs in 2004-2005, traditional Giessen 46ers lost several key players to injury including Chuck Eidson who missed the majority of the year recovering from a knee injury.  Crafty head coach Stephan Koch guided the team despite these setbacks to a solid 11-19 mark good enough for 11th.

Frankfurt

An injury riddled roster and slow start doomed the strong Skyliner squad last season.  A coaching change saw Charles Barton assume control and the Skyliners finished 10-20 just safe in the league.  The team also struggled through an 0-10 ULEB Cup run. The powerful Skyliners look to revamp and reload this year.

Trier

Trier was steady and solid all season under the direction of Joe Whelton.  A 15-15 finish in 9th place left them just on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Brian Brown was ALL STAR GAME MVP and led the league in assists.

L´kusen

After a slow start, Leverkusen finished strong rising from boarderline relegation to a solid 13-17 10th place finish.  Shooter Brandon Woudstra made an impact for his new team during the year.

Tübingen

WALTER Tigers Tubingen made a midseason coaching change replacing Pat Elzie with Aaron McCarthy.  The team finished 11-19.  Bingo Merriex enjoyed an outstanding season.

K´ruhe

Another early season coaching change saw Karlsruhe release Uwe Sauer and promote assistant Horst Schmitz.  The team finished 10-20 in 13th place.  Narcisse Ewodo was among league scoring leaders.

Nürnberg

"Aufsteigger" SELLBYTEL Baskets Nurnberg finished their first Bundesliga season 9-21 in 15th place which led to potential relegation.  However, with the Bundesliga expansion to 18 teams, the Nurnberg team capitalized on their chance to keep a "Wildcard" lisence with hardwork in the offseason.  Several veteran Nurnberg players enjoued their Bundesliga experience after years of success in the 2.Bundesliga.

New Yorker

Starting the season slowly under the direction of former German National team head coach Henrik Detman, made a coaching change midseason signing experienced Emir Mutapic (formerly of ALBA Berlin).  The team improved down the stretch but was unable to avoid a relegation spot with a 7-23 record.  In the offseason, the Bundesliga voted to expand to 18 teams thus giving Braunschweig the opportunity for a "Wildcard" lisence.  The traditional team made it work and will rebuild for an improved season ahead.
