Ulm Celebrates Season with Win Over Bonn!

ratiopharm Ulm celebrated the final game of the 2007-2008 Bundesliga season and close of two careers by earning an exciting 93-83 home win over Telekom Baskets Bonn before a sold out Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm Saturday night. More than just a game, Saturday night was recognition for unselfish effort, appreciation for committment and a thank you for hardwork. In a tribute to retiring German players Florian Mobius and Jan Sprunken, ratiopharm Ulm played inspired basketball jumping to a 31-19 lead after one quarter and they never looked back.  Led by All Stars Jeff Gibbs, who produced a 20 point 10 rebound double double, and Konrad Wysocki, who added 18 points 6 rebounds in the win, ratiopharm Ulm completed their season in style Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.

EYE OF THE TIGER!

ratiopharm Ulm understood the meaning of Wednesday nights Baden-Wurtemburg Derby against rival Walter Tigers Tubingen.   Focused like the eye of the tiger, ratiopharm Ulm opened the first quarter on fire hitting 5 three pointers and used excellent transition basketball to build a 41-25 first half lead.  But as with any excellent rivalry between archenemies, winning requires a complete 40 minute game.  After a strong Tubingen comeback and 63-61 Tiger lead with seven minutes to play, ratiopharm Ulm responded to finish the game on a 17-7 run with big baskets from Jeff Gibbs, Dru Joyce and EJ Gallup to seal the win.  Wednesday night in the Baden Wurtemburg rivalry at Tubingen Arena, ratiopharm Ulm stared down the eye of the tiger --- and won.      Click here for complete Ulm @ Tubingen Game Summary!

BAMBERG COMESBACK IN ULM!

Prior to tip off at Sportszentrum Kuhberg, brose Baskets Bamberg were the only Bundesliga team ratiopharm Ulm had not beaten since returning to the Bundesliga last season.  Despite a terrific team effort, Ulm's shorthanded squad came up just short of an upset as Robert Garrett and Darren Fenn pushed the reigning German Champs past ratiopharm Ulm 79-69 Sunday afternoon in Ulm.  Leading 50-45 after three quarters, Ulm lost lone point guard Dru Joyce to a 5th foul with over 7 minutes to play and the battle-tested Bamberg team capitalized.  Although Ulm's effort was strong, shooting percentages of 40% from the floor and 50% from the foul line were simply not enough to knock off a top team such as Bamberg.

Missing parts, Ulm falls in Paderborn!

Even with a terrific offensive effort, ratiopharm Ulm could not overcome their missing parts in Friday nights 101-91 road loss to digibu Baskets Paderborn at Sportszentrum Maspernplatz.  Despite playing without key players Konrad Wysocki, Bryan Lucas and Emeka Erege, ratiopharm Ulm jump-started their engines with a second quarter run resulting in a 58-51 halftime lead.  Paderborn's third quarter run and Ulm's loss of both All Star power forward Jeff Gibbs and starting center Sean Finn to five fouls turned momentum to the hosts as Paderborn took a 79-72 lead into the fourth.

ratiopharm Ulm played well.  But Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg, Ulm did not play well enough to beat the hottest team in the Bundesliga as Ewe Baskets Oldenburg came from behind in the fourth quarter to top ratiopharm Ulm 90-82 in an exciting game of runs.  Sean Finn posted a 17 point 12 rebound double double and Jeff Gibbs added 17 points 9 rebounds of his own as Ulm pushed to a 44-37 halftime lead and 69-63 lead after three.  Unfortunately, the fourth quarter belonged to Oldenburg as the Thunderbirds made several big baskets to storm back late in the game. BREMERHAVEN ICES ULM!

ratiopharm Ulm had plenty of chances to get hot in Friday nights showdown against Bremerhaven, but in the end cold shooting and solid Eisbaren play combined to put Ulm on ice in an 82-75 home loss at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.  Entering the game as the Bundesliga's top rated offense, Ulm struggled to 36% floor shooting including 9 for 35 (25%) from three while making only 10 of 20 from the foul line.  Ulm's cold shooting froze their fourth quarter comeback attempt as Bremerhaven earned the road win.  An important win for playoff position, Bremerhaven improved to 14-13 while ratiopharm Ulm slipped to 13-15.  Despite the loss, all was not lost as Ulm maintained the head to head tiebreaker.  With six games remaining, Ulm aims to bounce back Sunday in their road game at Jena.

ULM UPSETS BERLIN!

Upsetting ALBA Berlin back in October at Sportszentrum Kuhberg was an historically significant win for ratiopharm Ulm that few results could top. While winning in Ulm was possible, many fans did not think Ulm had any chance to ever win in Berlin.  After all, entering Saturday nights tipoff, Ulm had never won at MaxSchmellinghalle. But playing the powerful Albatross, in the midst of a losing streak and without captain Emeka Erege or PG Kyle Bailey, Ulm took the floor with the most important element --- Belief.  In the outstanding team performance, sparked by EJ Gallup's 6 point play and Bryan Lucas' perfect performance from three, ratiopharm Ulm put six players in double digits to upset German power ALBA Berlin 94-90 marking another significant win for Ulm basketball.  It was the first time Ulm has ever beaten ALBA Berlin at MaxSchmellinghalle.  For ratiopharm Ulm, upsetting ALBA Berlin in Ulm was something special.  But an upset in Berlin is achieving the unthinkable.  Saturday night, ratiopharm Ulm proved, it's not about what people think; It's about what you believe.        Click here for complete Ulm @ ALBA Game Summary!

Ulm Falls to Frankfurt!

The difference between a win and a loss can be small --- a game could boil down to a point or a play and adding high intensity to two hot teams can lead to a decisive boiling point.  Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg,  ratiopharm Ulm and Deutsche Bank Skyliners went nose to nose in an exciting midseason matchup that showcased heated action, talented players and cool plays.  At the end, experience and depth made the difference as the Skyliners edged Ulm 87-83 in an exciting game filled with competition and opportunities. Six Skyliners reached double figures in a balanced team offensive attack as Frankfurt shot 51% from the floor, but it was the intense Frankfurt defense which which limited Ulm to 39% shooting and keyed the hardfought road win.  Sometimes the difference between winning and losing comes down to makes or misses and what each team does when they have the ball in their hands.  Ulm's terrific team effort came up just short to a strong Skyliner team who made the big play.

Facing the uptempo attack and pressure system employed by BG74 Gottingen, ratiopharm Ulm resorted to what they do best --- playing a power game.  All Star power forward Jeff Gibbs powered his way a fantastic 21 point 17 rebound game, Bryan Lucas scored 15 points with 4 boards and Konrad Wysocki added a 13 point 10 rebound double double as Ulm earned an exciting 91-82 road win Thursday night at Lokhalle in Gottingen.  Stretching their winning streak to 5 games, Ulm broke open an even 46-46 game with a 25-16 third quarter.  Facing their former team, both Konrad Wysocki and Kyle Bailey made big baskets in the second half and were well-received from the passionate Lokhalle crowd.  An exciting game of runs, Ulm met the unique challenge of Gottingen's run and gun system with a solid team effort.  It took Ulm two quarters to figure out the puzzle, but in Thursday night's win, Ulm's answer was their power play. MIRACLE AT OLDENBURG!

Down two points, with 7 seconds remaining, without the basketball and no team fouls, ratiopharm Ulm had almost no chance to pull out their second road win of the season and fourth consecutive win --- one could say they needed a "Miracle".   As the stunning seven seconds played out, Ulm captain Emeka Erege banked in a half-court buzzer-beater to deliver a miraculous 73-72 victory Sunday night at Ewe Arena.  Overjoyed with emotion, Ulm celebrated their captains magic touch with pure excitement as a silent, shocked crowd looked on.  After trailing by as many as 16 points, Emeka's heroics capped a tremendous comeback in which ratiopharm Ulm outscored the Thunderbirds 24-9 in the fourth quarter.  A moment for a lifetime, Emeka Erege's shot will be remembered as Ulm's "Miracle at Oldenburg!"
