Pro Basketball in Eastern Europe

CZECH REPUBLIC

One of the most underrated and interesting leagues in Europe, the Mattoni NBL in the Czech Republic offers contrasts because of their rules and central location.  Teams are allowed a total of 3 import players from outside Czech borders.  Some teams choose to bring in American players while others build with Yugoslavian style --- this major contrast appears in style of play on the floor between teams built differently.  Because little English is spoken, most teams choose Czech or Yugo style coaches which leads to little chance of English speaking coaches working in Czech Republic. A wonderful country filled with nice people, Czech Republic pays top players well and often keeps them in the league for several seasons.  Sparta Prague, BK Nymburk and BK SCE Decin are a few of the top teams.  BK Nymburk competes in the FIBA Europe League while BK Opava plays in the ULEB Cup.  Both A Plus Brno and Mlkekarna Kunin are entered in FIBA Europe Cup.

POLAND

12 teams in Poland's top division allow 2 American import players. Not a first choice country compared to Spain or Italy, top teams in Poland such as WTK Anwil Wloclawek or Prokom Trefl Sopot attract experienced quality pros as well as excellent Lithuanian and Latvian players.  Standard of living and lifestyle are not as comfortable as in southern Europe but Poland can be an excellent stop for a season or two to gain experience, build reputation and earn money.

HUNGARY

A step below Poland and Czech Republic, Hungary is neither as professional or organized.  Lifestyle is not easy, especially outside of major city Budapest.  Good eastern European players fill the league.  Most teams featyre 2 American imports along with a couple of bosman players.  The homeland Hungarian players are not particularly strong.

LITHUANIA

World Championship and Olympic success for the national team are a product of the Lithuanian passion with basketball.  Outstanding Lithuanian players have signed contracts in the NBA, Spanish ACB and Italian Serie A.  Lithuania's pro basketball leagues are very strong and extremely physical.  Lietuvos rytas Vilnius and BC Zalgiris Kaunas are powers that compete for the championship.  BC Zalgiris Kaunas is the home club from superstar Arvydas Sybonis.  Lithuanian players are talented and skilled enough that some teams play with one American import player --- two are allowed per team.  NBA level players and elite pros often fill these spots. Differences in culture between Russia and America can lead to culture shock but experienced pros know how to handle themselves.  Basketball is important to the people of Lithuania making this one of the special spots in Europe to play.

LATVIA

Like Lithuania, Latvian people share a passion for basketball.  A small 8 team league plays competitive and physical ball.  Rosters allow for 2 American imports often coming with experience from USBL, CBA or major European teams.  BK Ventspils is a perennial powerhouse used to winning.  Many teams sign Russian players instead of other imports because cultures are similar.  Hard winters await everyone entering the Baltic states, but snowy evenings heat up on the hardwood making Latvia a good place to play.
