Friday night, ratiopharm Ulm and Phoenix Hagen look forward to an uptempo fast-paced matchup.
ratiopharm Ulm All Star forward Robin Benzing drives the lane against Phoenix Hagen earlier this season at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.
This season, Hagen raced to a fast 3-1 start winning their first game of the season at Walter Tigers Tubingen 89-76 October 2nd. The next week Hagen lost their home opener 75-61 against defending Bundesliga champions brose Baskets Bamberg October 8th. Hagen put together back to back wins topping MBC 76-63 October 10th and outshooting Eisbaren Bremerhaven 107-77 October 15th. In their next game against Telekom Baskets Bonn, Hagen fell 103-102 in overtime October 24th. Hagen bounced back to beat EnBW Ludwigsburg 95-82 October 31st before the Phoenix lost back to back games against Trier 77-70 November 3rd and in Bayreuth 99-96 November 7th. Then Hagen ran all over Ewe Baskets Oldenburg 89-62 after building a 54-16 halftime lead. Hagen's road loss in Ulm November 20th started a seven game losing streak where the Phoenix fell off their hot early season pace. But the team bounced back with a three game winning streak including a 92-86 home win over ALBA Berlin January 12th, 2011. Since that point, the team has posted a 3-5 mark winning their last home game 94-88 over Bayreuth March 5th, 2011 before falling on the road at Oldenburg 102-91 March 12th.

ratiopharm Ulm point guard Tommy Mason-Griffin dished out 9 assists against MBC, a season-high mark for all Ulm players.
Phoenix Hagen have rebuilt their roster for the 2010-2011 season and the early season results have been excellent. Returning from last seasons team are athletic combo guard Quentin Pryor (11.7ppg 3.4reb 2.5ast 24%threes), veteran center Bernd Kruell (6.4ppg 3.4reb) and bench players Malte Schwartz and Dominik Spohr. Pryor has been a key player for Hagen for several seasons and brings tremendous versatility to the perimeter of the Phoenix. Veteran Kruell is a crafty, experienced big man with excellent skills in the post. Schwarz and Spohr provide Hagen with quality depth. Several key additions have sparked the Phoenix hot start to the season including scoring guard Mark Dorris (14.7ppg 3.2reb 3.5ast), shooting guard David Bell (16.1ppg 37% threes) and skilled four man Jacob Burtschi (14.1ppg 6.5reb 45%threes). An excellent player in transition, Dorris pushes the basketball after makes and misses and creates for himself and teammates. David Bell errupted for a 9 of 10 three point shooting performance earlier this season in the Hagen road win at Bremerhaven. Burtschi is a key piece to the Hagen puzzle adding a perimeter skilled four with outstanding three point shooting ability currently hitting at 45%. Hagen also added former Paderborn post player Matt Terwilliger for depth in the front court. The former Ohio State center is currently averaging 5.1ppg 3.2reb while hitting 37% from three. After joining Hagen late last season, former Bremerhaven shooter Zygimantas Jonusas also returns to play a central role in Phoenix success. Jonusas is scoring 12.5ppg with 3.9reb and 38% from the three point line. Hardworking post man Eddie Seward has energized his team since returning from injury producing 5.1ppg 5.4reb. Throughout the 2010-2011 Bundesliga season, Phoenix Hagen have demonstrated an excellent transition attack along with aggressive team defense. Certainly, Hagen will be motivated to protect their homecourt Friday night.
No one is more excited for Friday's game than ratiopharm Ulm point guard Per Gunther. Growing up in a basketball family, Per learned the game from his father, a former player for Giessen and Hagen. His mother was also a professional basketball player in the German league. It is safe to say that Per comes from a basketball family in Hagen Germany. Over the course of his development, Per played with pride for his hometown Hagen and made a name for himself throughout the youth programs. Playing for Hagen in the NBBL and 2.Bundesliga South, Per entered the German National team program and played in the Bundesliga Rookie All Star Game in Koeln. In 2006-2007 with Hagen, Per produced 8.1ppg 1.3reb and 2.2ast shooting 33% from three and 80% from the foul line for the Phoenix in the 2.Bundesliga North. In 2007-2008, Per averaged 14.5ppg 1.9reb and 2.4ast while shooting 35% from three and 80% from the foul line for the Phoenix in the 2.Bundesliga North. Moving to Ulm in the 2008-2009 season, Per earned Bundesliga Rookie of the Year honors with an outstanding first season in the German first division as he scored 4.7ppg with 1.6ast and 74% free throw shooting. Last year, Per was voted as a starter on the South team at the Bundesliga All Star Game in Bonn. Without question a special game for Per every time he faces his hometown team, Friday's road trip to Hagen is the next memorable matchup for Per Gunther to face his former team.

ratiopharm Ulm center John Bryant is the Bundesliga's leading rebounder at 10.6 rebounds per game.
In the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, ratiopharm Ulm outgunned Phoenix Hagen 96-89 in an uptempo game of runs that took Sportszentrum Kuhberg on an exciting rollercoaster ride Saturday night November 20th, 2010 in Ulm. Per Gunther led the Ulm attack with 20 points against his hometown team while Robin Benzing added a strong 14 point 10 rebound double double, Coleman Collins finished with a productive 14 point 9 rebound 5 assist night and Sean Sonderleiter worked for a physical 14 points 6 rebounds in the win. Earlier last season, ratiopharm Ulm gave away a lead down the stretch in a heartbreaking road loss at Hagen Sunday night October 18th, 2009. ratiopharm Ulm controlled the action leading for most of the game, but six missed free throws in the final two minutes and a fouled three point shooter gave Phoenix Hagen their chance --- and a cool Chase Griffin capitalized. Despite six missed free throws down the stretch, ratiopharm Ulm's Rocky Trice sank two clutch foul shots putting Ulm in a position to win. Leading 75-73 with 4 seconds to play, Ulm needed one defensive stop to even their record at 2-2 on the young Beko Bundesliga season. But a crafty Griffin, drew a foul while shooting a three from the top of the key and proceeded to sink three straight free throws lifting Hagen to the thrilling come-from-behind win.

ULM HOSTS TRIER!
ratiopharm Ulm vs Trier
Sunday March 20th, 2011 4pm
Sportszentrum Kuhberg Ulm, Germany
ratiopharm Ulm plays host to Trier Sunday afternoon at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in the second game of their 'Double-Game Day' Weekend.
Trier revamped their organization over the summer hiring Henrik Roedl as their new head coach. A former University of North Carolina Tarheel who enjoyed an outstanding playing career for ALBA Berlin and the German National team, Henrik was a successful head coach for ALBA Berlin and most recently worked with the ALBA Berlin NBBL team and U20 German National team. During his days at North Carolina playing under legendary head coach Dean Smith, Henrik was part of the 1993 UNC National championship team. With the German National team Henrik won the 1993 European Championship, competed in the 1992 Olympic games and played in the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis. As a player Henrik helped lead ALBA Berlin to Bundesliga championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. During a successful run with ALBA Berlin as head coach, Henrik guided ALBA to a German Cup win in 1996 and the 1996 Bundesliga finals. Recently, Roedl coached the ALBA Berlin NBBL team to the NBBL championship last season.
After a fantastic playing career that included an NCAA title with North Carolina, a European championship in 1993 and 6 Bundesliga titles with ALBA Berlin, Henrik Roedl takes over TBB Trier this season.
Taking over Trier, Henrik brought much of the 'ALBA way' to Trier and the team has made a commitment to playing young-german players. At the point, former ratiopharm Ulm point guard Dru Joyce is Trier's floor general. Leading the Bundesliga in assists during the 2008-2009 season while playing in Ulm, the former Akron Zip was a big part in ratiopharm Ulm's successful run to the playoffs. After playing last season in Poland, Dru is currently averaging 12.4ppg 3reb 5.4ast for Trier. At the two, shooting threat Barry Stewart produces 8.1ppg 3.3reb and veteran combo guard John Bynum (6.8ppg 3.3reb) brings Bundesliga experience from Bremerhaven along with excellent defense to Trier. In the post, veteran George Evans returns to Trier and has given his team a solid 7.3ppg 3.8reb while young German post man Maik Zirbes continues to develop into an excellent player. Zirbes has been in the starting lineup and contributes 7.3ppg 4.3reb along with excellent effort and work in transition. Bench players Samy Picard from neighboring Luxembourg and hardworking Kosta Karamatskos are fan favorites who are strong team players that provide Trier with depth.
But with the arrival of Henrik Roedl, Trier began to rebuild their program in the model of ALBA Berlin. Along with the similar playing style, Henrik also has made the commitment to play young German players. Interestingly, several members of the 2010-2011 Trier team have connections to the ALBA Berlin program just like their head coach. Talented three man Philip Zwiener headlines the new direction for Trier and has been outstanding this year producing 13.6ppg 5.1reb while shooting 33% from three. After several seasons of hardwork as a backup in Berlin, Philip is taking his lessons learned and applying them on-court in Trier. Talented young players Oskar Fassler (5.5ppg 2.3reb 34% from three) and Oliver Clay (2.6ppg 1.9reb) also have made an impact with Trier this season. Finally, former ALBA Berlin forward Dragan Dojcin, an underrated player for the Berlin success over the last few seasons, steps into the starting lineup for Trier. A terrific three point shooter from the four spot, Dojcin currently averages 7.4ppg 3.5reb with 37% three point shooting for Trier. The new faces and playing style have helped Trier off to a strong start in the 2010-2011 Beko Basketball Bundesliga season.
Former ratiopharm Ulm point guard Dru Joyce is now the floor general in Trier.
Trier's 2010-2011 season opened with a 70-46 home loss to Gottingen October 3rd but the team picked up their first win 68-63 over Tubingen October 8th and improved to 2-1 with an 83-76 home win over MBC October 14th. After the three straight home games, Trier took the road for a northern road trip falling 73-72 in Bremerhaven October 24th before dropping another tight result 68-66 in Oldenburg October 26th. Trier returned home for a big 65-48 victory over Telekom Baskets Bonn October 30th, won on the road in Hagen 77-70 November 3rd and won a third straight game beating EnBW Ludwigsburg 82-69 November 6th improving their record to 5-3. Trier visited ALBA Berlin in a homecoming for much of their roster November 9th and fell in a hardfought 67-59 effort. November 12th, Trier returned home losing to Bayreuth 71-61 before falling 80-65 in Artland November 20th. After edging ratiopharm Ulm 85-79 November 28th, Trier topped Dusseldorf before suffering back to back losses to Bamberg and Frankfurt. Trier won their next two holiday home games beating Giessen and Braunschweig before splitting the next two with a loss in Gottingen and home win over Tubingen. Trier lost at home to ALBA Berlin January 30th but reeled off four wins in five games before losing last weekend 84-71 in Bayreuth Sunday March 13th. Trier plays host to Oldenburg Wednesday night March 16th at Trier Arena prior to their Sunday road trip to Sportszentrum Kuhberg to face ratiopharm Ulm.
Earlier this season, in a strong third quarter, ratiopharm Ulm outscored TBB Trier 25-14 taking a 62-61 lead into the fourth, but former Ulm point guard Dru Joyce and veteran forward Dragan Dojcin made big plays down the stretch as Trier downed ratiopharm Ulm 85-79 Sunday night November 28th, 2010 at Trier Arena. John Bryant powered the Ulm attack with an 18 point 11 rebound double double while Coleman Collins added 14 points 9 rebounds 4 assists and Robin Benzing finished with 13 points 6 boards in the loss.
