ratiopharm Ulm Finishes Preseason Strong!!

ratiopharm Ulm topped FIBA EUROPE CUP team BK Khimik from the Ukraine 90-72 Thursday night in Prostejov Czech Republic to cap their excellent progress during the 2007 preseason.  Together since late August, Ulm will continue their buildup for their Bundesliga season opener when they return to practice Monday in Ulm.  Saturday the team will enjoy a team day at the world famous OKTOBERFEST in Munich.  Playing with a shorthanded roster in the challenging Prostejov Open tournament, Ulm gained tremendous experience for key bench players during the extremely competitive three games.  Ulm players and staff can feel great about their teamwork throughout the five weeks and Thursday's win represents the perfect way to finish a preseason strong!

GAME BY GAME SUMMARY

ratiopharm Ulm tipped off their 2007 Prostejov Open with an 84-55 defeat at the hands of tournament host BK Prostejov Tuesday night in Prostejov Czech Republic.  Already without energizing forward Konrad Wysocki who remained home in Ulm to rest and recover from a chest cold, Ulm lost captain Emeka Erege to an ankle injury late in the third quarter then ran out of gas in the fourth as Prostejov outscored Ulm 25-9 in the final frame to run away with the game.  Ulm trailed 42-34 at half and battled through the third quarter before Prostejov took control.  7'1 three point shooting specialist Stanislav Votroubek buried 4 of 5 threes to help break the game open for the hosts.  Playing without American point guard Rashaan Ames, Captain Jan Pavlik topscored for Prostejov with 16 points including 4 of 6 threes followed by Pavel Bosak and Alexandar Bojic with 15 points and Votroubek added 14 points and 8 boards.  Sebastian Betz led Ulm with 11 points and Dru Joyce added a strong 10 off the bench.  As a team Ulm shot 33% from two point range (13-39) and 18% from three (4-22).  Jeff Gibbs grabbed 11 rebounds for Ulm.  Making circumstances difficult for the 4:30pm tip, Ulm arrived at the TennisClub Hotel in Prostejov at 1:30pm after travel which included a stuttgart to Vienna, Austria flight and 3 hour plus bus ride through southeastern Czech wine country into Prostejov.

Kyle Bailey enjoyed a terrific Prostejov Open tournament.  Here, the Santa Clara product takes aim at a free throw against Prostejov Tuesday afternoon.  In the three games, KB was 11 for 12 from the charity stripe!

Ulm PG Dru Joyce was a great spark for his team in the Prostejov Open.  The rookie completed an impressive preseason with quality play in the three day tournament in Czech Republic.

Ulm C Sean Finn blocks this Robert Tomaszek attempt.  Finn strengthened the Ulm paint with solid post defense in the three day tournament but the 7 footers highlight was a steal and coast to coast breakaway dunk against Khimik Thursday night.

BK Khimik won the preseason battle of Ukraine SuperLeague foes 98-83 at the Prostejov Open in Prostejov Czech Republic at Tuesday evening's late game. A strong team effort from Khimik proved to be the key down the stretch as PG Wykeen Kelly and 3man Sasa Bratic shared topscoring honors with 16 points apiece.  Nikola Lepojevic, Aleksandar Djuric and Andriy Agafonov added 14 points each as Khimik sank a sizzling 71% from the floor in two point range and 11 of 19 (58%) from three in the win.  Cherkassy was led by point guard Jason Straight's 22 points 5 rebounds while power forward Martynas Andriukaitis added 20 points in the loss.  Athletic three man Leon Rodgers produced a solid double doule of 19 points 11 boards for the Monkeys who outrebounded Khimik 28-23 but fell off the scoring pace down the stretch.  Both teams meet in late October during the Ukraine SuperLeague this season and both will play-in for the FIBA EUROCUP.

Day 2 Results

Khimik put 6 players in double figures in their balanced team win over host BK Prostejov Wednesday afternoon in the Prostejov Open.  Hardworking guard Andriy Korochkin, mostly known for his hardnosed on-ball, pressure D, topscored for Khimik with 14 points in the win.  Nikola Lepojevic and Sasa Bratic added 12, Goran Cakic 11 points and athletic big man Andriy Agafonov and skilled post Aleksandar Djuric contributed 10 points apiece.  Prostejov was led by Pavel Bosak's 23 points on 10 for 14 floor shooting and Alexandar Bojic's 16 point night.  Khimik broke the game open in the early second half but Prostejov fought back before falling short in the fourth.  The impressive team defense from Khimik marked a strong stretch through the second and third quarters which saw them outscore the hosts 45-30.  Khimik gained control of first place in the tournament with the win.

With a days rest and terrific effort from bench players, ratiopharm Ulm pushed powerful BK Cherkassy Monkeys to the limit Wednesday night at the Prostejov Open before falling 97-91.  The FIBA Europe Cup team based in Cherkassy, Ukraine showed their class early with a strong 27-22 first quarter effort sparked by talented Leon Rodgers and Yosef Tamir.  Ulm changed the game in the second and outscored the Monkeys 28-18 to take a 50-45 halftime lead.  Outstanding team effort and tremendous contributions from bench players Florian Mobius, Sean Finn and Jan Sprunken drove Ulm.  Drawing a start for injured captain Emeka Erege, young talent Sebastian Betz continued his excellent development gaining great experience during the tournament.  In the competitive third quarter, Ulm maintained a slim lead as Cherkassy outscored them 27-26 setting the score at 76-72 heading into the fourth.  Down the stretch, Cherkassy's Leon Rodgers ---a Columbus Ohio product and good friend of Ulm power forward Jeff Gibbs --- went to work getting several clutch baskets including a tough right wing three and amazing left block baseline turnaround J.  In a two point game with less than two minutes remaining, Ulm came up empty on several possessions and Cherkassy stretched their final margin on free throws as the buzzer sounded at 97-91.  Rodgers hit 5 of 9 threes  for a game best 28 points with 6 boards.  Physical Martynas Andriukaitis contributed 24 points while Yosef Tamir added 14 points and 8 rebounds in the paint.  Forward Balsa Radulovic gave the Monkeys 14 points and 5 rebounds.  Kyle Bailey led Ulm's balanced effort with 17 points followed closely by EJ Gallup at 15 points and Jeff Gibbs with a 15 point 10 rebound double double.  Bryan Lucas produced 14 points and solid defense for Ulm in the loss.  With a hotshooting second half, dependable Florian Mobius contributed 11 points and Jan Sprunken 8 points from the bench.  As a team Ulm hit 13 of 24 threes (54%) but converted only 14 of 24 free throws (54%).  Cherkassy outrebounded Ulm 33-29.  Despite the result, the game provided ratiopharm Ulm with outstanding preseason competition and allowed the team the opportunity to give minutes to several key bench players helping to prepare them for the season. 

 

Day 3 Results

In the tournaments most exciting game, host BK Prostejov fought valliantly before falling to Cherkassy Monkeys 127-120 in a triple overtime game shown live on National Czech TV. Both teams made remarkable plays as events unfolded with exceptional performances from Cherkassy's Leon Rodgers and Prostejov's Stanislav Votroubek. Rodgers once again was amazing in the clutch with big baskets when his team needed them most totaling 33 points with 10 rebounds and 4 assists in just over 50 minutes of action.  Shooting guard Andrii Lebediev was also in top form adding 27 points 4 boards and 6 steals.  Big man Yosef Tamir chipped in a strong 18 point 11 rebound game and PG Jason Straight finished with 17 points including several key baskets down the stretch to seal the win in the third overtime.  Jan Pavlik was good totaling 24 points and Stanislav Votroubek's soft shooting touch accounted for 22 points in the entertaining game.  Power forward Robert Tomaszek worked for 19 points 9 rebounds in the paint for Prostejov.  The game was filled with terrific preseason action to wet the appetite of Czech basketball fans all over the nation on Czech TV.

ratiopharm Ulm closed their 2007 preseason schedule with an excellent performance in their 90-72 victory over BC Khimik from the Ukraine at the Prostejov Open Thursday night in Prostejov Czech Republic.  Kyle Bailey was outstanding on both ends of the floor leading Ulm scoring with 27 points while Jeff Gibbs produced another double-double (17 points 11 rebounds) and EJ Gallup added 15 points with 5 three point makes in the team win.  Bruan Lucas scored 13 points before fouling out late in the fourth.  Ulm hit 44% from three (11-25), over 50% from the floor and tied the powerful team wih 34 rebounds apiece.  Aleksandar Djuric led Khimik with 16 points 5 boards while Sasa Bratic chipped in 15 points 9 rebounds.  Post man Andrei Agafonov scored 13 with 5 rebounds and Nikolai Lepojevic reached 13 points in the loss.  Khimik played without key PG Wykeen Kelly.  Despite the loss, Khimik won the tournament based on other results. 

ratiopharm Ulm head coach Mike Taylor was extremely pleased with the teams progress at the Prostejov Open especially the terrific preseason ending victory over the strong BK Khimik squad.
