ratiopharm Ulm travels north to the beautiful countryside of Quakenbruck Germany Friday night April 23rd for the first game of their two game weekend road trip.  A small town with big basketball tradition, Quakenbruck fills Artland Arena with tremendous intensity in support of their Dragons.  Currently hunting for a playoff place, Artland enters Friday nights game 17-14 hoping to catch a few teams ahead of them to seal the 8th and final playoff place.  While the Dragons search a playoff place, ratiopharm Ulm aims for their first road win at Artland Arena.

ratiopharm Ulm power forward Christian Burns is focused for the intensity in Artland Arena Friday night.

With the challenging two-game weekend road trip lined up, ratiopharm Ulm planned to fly north to Bremen Germany making the travel simple and easy.  Unfortunately, the volcanic erruption in Iceland and ash cloud over Europe forced Ulm to change their travel plans.  With flights canceled for the remainder of the week, Ulm turned to plan B for 'bus'.  Fortunately, the flexible travel schedule was given enough advance notice and the team will enjoy a long busride over the beautiful German countryside to start the teams final road trip of the season.

Artland's 2009-2010 season opened with a four game winning streak as the Dragons beat Gottingen 75-73 October 9th and edged Bonn 76-75 October 11th before beating Ludwigsburg 90-72 October 14th and topping MBC 101-91 October 18th.  After the 4-0 start, Artland dropped back to back games losing 94-86 to Braunschweig October 23rd and falling 74-68 to Bamberg Sunday October 25th.  Artland hammered Paderborn 81-53 October 30th before beating Hagen 106-89 November 1st.  At 6-2, Artland lost in Trier 75-73 November 7th but bounced back to trip Frankfurt 77-76 November 14th.  Following the Frankfurt win, the Dragons dropped three straight games losing 85-76 in Giessen November 21st, falling 78-70 home to ALBA Berlin November 28th and 66-62 away against rival Oldenburg December 6th.  Artland responded with an 85-66 home win over Dusseldorf raising their record to 8-6 for the season entering Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. After topping Ulm, the Dragons improved to 9-6.  But a three game losing streak evened Artaland at 9-9 just after the new year.  2 wins were followed by three straight losses and three straigh wins to settle the Dragons at 14-12.  Two home wins and two road losses put Artland at 16-14 before last weekends 93-60 blowout road win in Dusseldorf.  With an 11-4 home record, Artland looks to protect their home court in these important games for their team.  At 17-14, Artland has three games remaining in their chase for the 8th and final playoff spot.  The Dragons hope for a strong finish and struggles in Bremerhaven and Braunschweig to claim a playoff place.

This season, Artland has a lineup loaded with talent. After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the Dragons are on fire to earn a post-season berth this year.  With three games remaining, the Dragons are in a must-win situation to catch the 8th place.  Artland made mid-season moves to improve their team last season and kept their two key acquisitions in point guard Ronald Ross and wing Toby Bailey.  Both players have previous Bundesliga experience with the former Texas Tech playmaker Ross having been with Ludwigsburg while the former UCLA and NBA wing Bailey drawing on experience from Koln.  A lightning quick guard who excels in transition and breaking down the defense off the dribble, Ross has produced 11.8ppg 2.8reb 3.2ast while shooting 27% from three this season while the versatile and talented Bailey has averaged 11.2ppg 3.5reb 2.7ast with 44% three point accuracy.  Artland made a key midseason move this year as well with the addition of veteran PG Hollis Price who led ALBA Berlin to the Bundesliga championship earlier in his career.  Since joining the Dragons, the former Oklahoma Sooner has averaged 8.9ppg 2.9reb 3.9ast and hit 43% from three.  In the post, Bundesliga All Star center Darren Fenn (13.8ppg 6reb 38%three 78% FT) continues to play at a high level and physical inside scorer Darius Hall (6.7ppg 3.2reb) serves as the teams emotional leader.  Veteran post man Chad Prewitt provides depth and stretches defenses with this three point shooting.  New additions in Artland include talented forward Nathan Peavy who joins the Dragons from a successful two season stint in Paderborn.  Peavy scores 10.8ppg 3.9reb 43% threes with the Dragons and adds athleticism and versatility to the front court.  Talented combo guard Folarin Campbell joins the Dragons and produces 7.7ppg 2.6reb 2.3ast 30%three point shooting and the former George Mason star has been a great addition to the backcourt.  Athletic wing Charles Lee (5.4ppg 3.1reb 34% threes) moves to Artland after a terrific season with Gottingen and has played a solid role with his new team.  Finally, veteran German wing Ali Seggelke has been playing outstanding basketball with the Dragons since making the jump from the Pro A into the Bundesliga this year.  Ali has hit 58% of his threes for 7.1ppg 2reb with the Dragons.  Providing depth for Artland, German players Flavio Stuckeman, Florian Hartenstein and Hendrik Feist fill out the roster with quality and have the ability to contribute when called upon.

ratiopharm Ulm Coleman Collins

Ulm and Artland have met seven times over the last three seasons with the Dragons taking 5 wins.  ratiopharm Ulm's two victories came at Sportszentrum Kuhberg giving Ulm a 2-2 mark at home against Artland.

A decisive late fourth quarte run lifted the Artland Dragons to a hardfought 72-62 win over ratiopharm Ulm Friday night December 18th, 2009 at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  In a back and forth game through the first three quarters, Ulm offense sputtered in the fourth quarter as Artland outscored Ulm 19-11 down the stretch as Ulm shot 39% for the game. The lack of offensive production spoiled a solid team defensive and strong rebounding effort from ratiopharm Ulm.  Power forward Christian Burns led Ulm scoring with a 20 point 7 rebound performance in the loss.

Last season, in 2008-2009, Ulm and Artland split a pair of games with each team protecting their home court.  In the most recent meeting, ratiopharm Ulm started slow in Saturday nights March 9, 2009 77-70 home win over the Artland Dragons, but as the intensity level rose on-court, Sportszentrum Kuhberg heated up.  Energized by one of their best defensive performances of the season, ratiopharm Ulm limited Artland to 31% shooting and outrebounded the Dragons 40-26 in the hardfought home win.   Ulm received a big assist from 'Kuhberghoelle' as the Ulm fans were in spectacluar form supporting their team.

on Sunday October 26th, ratiopharm Ulm went into the Dragons-lair of Artland Arena and gave a valliant effort before falling to the powerful Artland Dragons 84-80 in an exciting Bundesliga game Sunday October 26th.  Ulm's outstanding first quarter helped them build a 30-13 lead before Artland responded with a strong second quarter run of their own.  After Artland took control in the third, a hungry Ulm team fought back in the fourth.  Trailing by two, 81-79 with two minutes to play, Ulm had four chances to tie the game but could not come up with the big basket.  At the final buzzer, the terrific team effort from ratiopharm Ulm fell just short.  Sean Finn enjoyed another excellent game scoring 23 points on 10 of 12 shooting to lead the Ulm attack.

In 2006-2007, ratiopharm Ulm and Artland split games with each team holding home court.  Ulm topped an injury-riddled Artland squad at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in January.  Rising to the top of the Bundesliga, the Dragons overcame major injury adversity that year before making a fantastic German Cup and Bundesliga playoff run.  In the other meeting later in 2006-2007, Ulm fell in Artland 99-81 as Jeff Gibbs powered his way to 19 points 7 rebounds on May 5, 2007  (click here for game summary)

In 2007-2008, Ulm traveled north to Quakenbruck for an October 14th contest. The Dragons handed them a convincing 86-63 loss in the third game of the season.

In the rematch, ratiopharm Ulm narrowly missed another big upset falling to the powerful Artland squad 87-84 Saturday afternoon Febuary 16th at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. Lamont McIntosh buried a clutch three pointer from the top of the key with 25.5 seconds to play and John Goldsberry sank key free throws to help the Artland Dragons avoid the ratiopharm Ulm upset bid.  Deadlocked at 79 with 1:52 to play, it was Artland who made the big shots down the stretch.  In the final 15 seconds, Ulm's EJ Gallup had two game-tying attempts rim out and Konrad Wysocki's desperation turnaround three was off line at the buzzer.  With Ulm leading 67-60 heading into the fourth, Artland turned up their defensive intensity and made several outstanding individual offensive plays resulting in big buckets from Leon Rodgers, Terrance Thomas and Lamont McIntosh.  Ulm's outstanding team effort fell just short to a Dragon team who showed their class down the stretch.

ULM AT OLDENBURG SUNDAY!

ratiopharm Ulm @ Ewe Baskets Oldenburg

Sunday April 25th, 2010  6pm

Ewe Arena   Oldenburg, Germany

ratiopharm Ulm plays defending Bundesliga champions Ewe Baskets Oldenburg in the back end of their weekend road trip Sunday night at Ewe Arena in Oldenburg.  Entering the weekend with a 23-8 record, Oldenburg is 14-1 at home as they prepare to host MBC Friday and ratiopharm Ulm on Sunday.

ratiopharm Ulm rookie forward Robin Benzing

This season the Ewe Baskets Oldenburg have performed like champions.  Overcoming several injuries throughout their schedule, the Thunderbirds have positioned themselves for another terrific post-season run.  Representing the Bundesliga extremely well in the Euroleague this year, Oldenburg gained tremendous experience playing against some of the best opponents possible all over Europe.  Oldenburg competed in the Euroleague, the highest level of basketball in Europe and among the best leagues in the world.  After opening with an exciting 87-81 road win over Asseco Prokom in Poland, the Thunderbirds have dropped seven straight games to this point losing 79-70 to Armani Jeans Milan, 77-72 in BC Khimki at Moscow, falling 104-61 to Spanish power Real Madrid, losing 96-63 in Greece against Panathinaikos, falling 82-80 at home to Asseco Prokom before losing 79-51 in Milan against Armani Jeans and most recently coming up short 62-49 home v BC Khimki.  Finally healthy, Oldenburg is focused to finish the season strong and defend their title as Bundesliga champions.

ratiopharm Ulm center Kevin Martin

Oldenburg's 2009-2010 season has started where the Thunderbirds left off.  Entering Sunday's game, Oldenburg is among the top teams in the Beko Bundesliga.  The Thunderbirds opened up with two home wins over brose Baskets Bamberg 67-55 October 10th and edging Deustche Bank Skyliners 63-61 October 15th.  On October 18th, ALBA Berlin topped Oldenburg 69-67 in a terrific early season matchup at O2 World in Berlin.  Oldenburg returned home to beat Dusseldorf 83-62 October 23rd before beating Bremerhaven on the road 88-80 in an early season rivalry game October 25th. November 1st, EnBW Ludwigsburg went into Ludwigsburg and won 72-63 but Oldenburg bounced back with a three game home winning streak including victories over Braunschweig 80-74 November 8th, 74-55 over Paderborn November 19th and 81-48 over Trier November 22nd.  At 9-2, Oldenburg traveled to Giessen where the 46ers upset them 78-73 November 28th.  The Thunderbirds bounced back for back to back home wins over Artland December 6th 66-62 and 87-61 against Walter Tigers Tubingen December 13th.  Last weekend, with wearly legs from the Euroleague road trips and without star Ricky Paulding, Oldenburg lost on the road in Weissenfels against MBC 74-65 Saturday December 19th.  In the Christimas game, ratiopharm Ulm enjoyed one of the highlights of their season earning a 100-82 home win over the powerful Thunderbird team.  But after the loss in Sportszentrum Kuhberg, finally able to focus on the Bundesliga after the Euroleague schedule, the healthy Oldenburg team reeled off 4 straight wins and 12 victories in 13 games.  Primed and prepared for the playoffs, Oldenburg looks to seal home court advantage in the first round and get their team ready for the post season by finishing their regular season schedule strong.

ratiopharm Ulm's Rocky Trice

After winning the Bundesliga Championship beating Bonn in an exciting 5 game series last spring, Head coach Predrag Krunic has retained most of his team while making a few key additions.  Earlier this season, Bundesliga MVP Jason Gardner went down with an injury missing most of the first few months of action.  Returning in a mid-season game at MBC just before Christmas, Gardner has averaged 8.6ppg 2.3reb 2.7ast while shooting 27% from the floor.  The former Arizona Wildcat will work his way back into form over the remainder of the season and surely be a major factor for the Thunderbirds as they work to defend their Bundesliga title.  While Gardner was out, talented scoring guard Je'Kel Foster has been in top form producing 13.6ppg 4.3reb 3.3ast with 39% three point shooting.  The former Ohio State guard, Foster has enjoyed strong games against Ulm over the last two seasons with both Oldenburg and Ludwigsburg.  But no player has been better against Ulm than Oldenburg's Ricky Paulding.  In the former Missouri Tigers last two trips to Sportszentrum Kuhberg, Paulding has exploded for 30 points in 2007 and 34 points last season.  This year, Ricky is averaging 13.8ppg 3.1reb 2.3ast on 37% three point shooting.  The tremendous combination of Gardner, Foster and Paulding make Oldenburg one of the most dangerous backcourts in the Bundesliga.  This season, the Thunderbirds added talented wing Josh Carter from Texas A & M.  As a rookie in the Bundesliga, Carter has given his team a solid 8.3ppg 2.2reb and 35% three point accuracy.  One of the unsung hero's for Oldenburg's early season, hardworking German guard Daniel Hain stepped into the rotation and gave his team solid minutes as he helped to offset the major loss of Gardner for the extended time of his injury.  While the backcourt ranks as one of the top units in the Bundesliga, Oldenburg's frontcourt also provides a strength for the team.  Veteran center Ruben Boumtje Boumtje mans the middle and brings 6.6ppg 5.7reb.  The former Portland Trailblazer and Georgetown big man is one of the top shotblocking post defenders in the Bundesliga.  At the four spot, skillful Jasmin Perkovic is healthy after missing most of last season due to injury.  Back in the starting lineup, Perkovic has produced 9ppg 4.6reb 30% three point shooting for the Thunderbirds.  Also making major contributions off the bench, big men Milan Majstorovic and Marko Scekic add a physical, hardworking presence to the paint.  Majstorovic has averaged 6.5ppg 4.3reb while playing both post spots and Scekic brings tremendous energy to the floor along with 8.4ppg 4.9reb.  Rounding out the roster, skilled shooting big man Daniel Strauch and three point marksman Marco Buljevic add depth and quality to the bench.

ratiopharm Ulm point guard Per Gunther

Earlier this season, a day after Christmas, ratiopharm Ulm celebrated their best Christmas present with a 100-82 Christmas Game home win over defending Bundesliga champions Ewe Baskets Oldenburg December 26th, 2009 before a sold out Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Christian Burns led six Ulmers in double digits with 23 points 4 rebounds and Coleman Collins added 19 points 5 boards while Austen Rowland was a perfect 6 for 6 from the floor for 16 points 6 assists in the win.

In 2008-2009, Oldenburg beat ratiopharm Ulm three times, once in the German Cup and twice in the Bundesliga game schedule. The last meeting at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm, Rickey Paulding scored 34 points including 25 in a fantastic first half performance from Ewe Baskets Oldenburg as the Thunderbirds beat ratiopharm Ulm 83-75 Saturday night Febuary 21, 2009 in Ulm.  Taking control early with excellent defense and efficient offense, Oldenburg opened a 10 point lead at half before breaking the game open with an 18-4 early third quarter run. ratiopharm Ulm competed with great heart battling back with a furious second half comeback rallying to cut the deficit to three twice in the final minutes.  Jasmin Perkovic's top of the key three was the daggar pushing Oldenburg back atop the Bundesliga as 'Tabellenfuhrer'.

Starting slowly on Wednesday night November 19th in a German Cup game against the Thunderbirds, ratiopharm Ulm spent most of the game digging out of their first quarter hole only to fall short in the end as Ewe Baskets Oldenburg eliminated Ulm 82-70 at Ewe Arena.  In the first quarter, ratiopharm Ulm could not get a bounce as they made 4 of 18 shots while watching Oldenburg build a 25-10 lead before Ulm could get the lid off.  Ulm bounced back trimming the halftime lead to 45-35 and pulling within 6 in the second half.  Oldenburg's excellent three point shooting and timely scoring kept Ulm's comeback attempt at bay as the Thunderbirds earned the win bouncing ratiopharm Ulm out of the German Cup.  Center Sean Finn led Ulm with a strong 18 point 11 rebound double double while Jeff Gibbs added 14 points 7 boards and Lee Humphrey 12 points in the loss.

One month earlier in a regular season Bundesliga game, Oldenburg edged ratiopharm Ulm 80-75 in an intensely competitive game at Ewe Arena in Oldenburg Saturday October 18th.  ratiopharm Ulm trailed by 16 points in the third quarter of their Game Day 5 road game at Ewe Arena against Ewe Baskets Oldenburg.  A powerful third quarter push from the Thunderbirds gave the home team momentum and the double-digit lead.  But Ulm had been there before.  Last season, the team trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter before staging an amazing comeback and miracle win capped by Emeka Erege's halfcourt shot.  Rallying around their belief, ratiopharm Ulm stormed back in an exciting fourth quarter comeback to even the game at 74 with 46 seconds to play.  Oldenburg's star point guard Jason Gardner made the difference with a skillful three point play and two clutch free throws to seal the Thunderbirds exciting 80-75 win.
