Ulm Enjoys Road trip to Austria
ratiopharm Ulm enjoyed an excellent road trip to Austria as they continued their preseason preparation for the 2009-2010 Bundesliga season. A terrific trip for the team on and off the floor, Ulm gained valuable experience playing together on the road against the top two Austrian teams Wels and Gmunden. Unfortunately for Ulm, Captain Lee Humphrey went down with an ankle injury early in the second quarter of Saturday nights game in Wels. Already shorthanded playing without Per Gunther, John Bryant and Robin Benzing, Ulm was left with five healthy players from their rotation and 4 youngsters. Despite the adversity, Ulm played very well as Rocky Trice, Christian Burns, Coleman Collins, Kevin Kanaskie and Sebastian Betz showed tremendous teamwork and competitiveness. Meanwhile, young players Nemanja Kekic, Michael Wenzl, Darko Jukic and Jerome Bridgewater supported the effort and contributed while getting minutes in the two games. Overall, Ulm made quality progress on their preseason road trip into Austria and brings back many positives from their performances. This week, the team looks forward to the return of German National team player Robin Benzing and injured post player John Bryant. Ulm's preseason schedule continues with a road game against brose Baskets Bamberg Saturday September 26th at JAKO Arena in Bamberg.

Saturday night, ratiopharm Ulm tipped off their weekend road trip to Austria with an outstanding preseason game against Wels in an exciting 90-86 overtime loss. Unfortunately for Ulm, the game was not the only loss on the evening as sharpshooting captain Lee Humphrey injured his ankle early in the second quarter. Despite the adversity, ratiopharm Ulm's effort was tremendous. Led by Rocky Trice and Coleman Collins, Ulm's iron five competed with great heart and teamwork. Rocky Trice was outstanding scoring a game best 35 points with 12 rebounds while Coleman Collins added strong 24 points 4 boards. Christian Burns chipped in 11 points 8 rebounds in the loss. Wels ran out to a fast start building a 12-6 early first quarter lead before Ulm established themselves behind Lee Humphrey's 9 first quarter points. Lee finished the first quarter with two three point makes and a strong driving layup to beat the quarter buzzer bringing Ulm back to a 19-18 deficit after one. Unfortunately, moments into quarter two, as Wels' Jason Conley closed out Lee shooting a three on the right wing, the former Florida Gator landed on a Conley foot and went down in pain. Despite the key loss, Ulm's five remaining rotation players and four youngsters rallied and battled. Five minutes into the second quarter Wels led 28-27. The back and forth game saw teams exchange leads throughout the first half. But Ulm overcame the injury to Humphrey, foul problems and shorthanded lineup to take a 35-34 lead into the halftime lockerroom. In the second half, Ulm found their rhythm and found the flow of the game better. Making an early second half run, Wels edged ahead 52-42 behind Jason Conley abd Tilo Klette. Ulm bounced right back. Finishing the third strong, Ulm cut the gap to 56-52 at the end of the third. Early in the fourth, Ulm made their run, an 8-0 surge that helped Ulm take a 58-56 lead. The fourth quarter developed into a fantastic preseason game. Ulm and Wels battled basket for basket throughout the fourth. Coleman Collins scored two baskets for Ulm while Klette scored once and Conley scored twice for Wels. Ulm's Christian Burns finished in the lane and with five minutes to play the game was even at 62. Down the stretch, Ulm put themselves in position for the road win. While Rocky Trice scored back to back baskets to carry Ulm, a Trent Meacham three gave Wels a 67-66 lead. Trice answered again reclaiming the lead for Ulm 68-67. Two Jason Conley free throws gave Wels a 69-68 lead but two Coleman Collins free throws put Ulm up 70-69 before two Kevin Kanaskie free throws stretched the Ulm lead to 72-69. A big Jason Conley three evened the score at 72. Ulm's Kanaskie buried a clutch three giving Ulm a 75-72 lead with 20 seconds to play. Up three, Ulm players tried to matchup and foul, but the Wels team quickly inbounded the ball and pushed it up the floor to a streaking Trent Meacham in the right corner. Open, Meacham buried the game tying three with 15 seconds to play. Ulm called timeout and set their strategy. Looking for the last shot, Ulm tried to get the ball to Rocky Trice, but good Wels defense prevented the pass. Ulm's Coleman Collins pivoted and attacked the basket. Coming up short on his finish, Wels grabbed the rebound and Trent Meacham raced up the floor in a 2 on 1. Ulm's Sebasitian Betz came up big drawing a charge with 2.1 seconds left to play. Out of timeouts, Ulm organized their floor. Kevin Kanaskie zipped a perfect pass between defenders to a streaking Christian Burns who took the pass like a tight end running in the seam. Burns, split the defenders as his momentum took him for a spin at the foul line. Athletically, Christian controlled his balance and flipped a last second attempt to the rim. Although the ball bounced softly off the rim, the play was an excellent close to an exciting 75-75 regulation. Free throws opened overtime as Trent Meacham sank 3 and Davor Lamesic one for Wels while Coleman Collins hit two and Christian Burns added one for Ulm. Wels led 79-78. Coleman Collins finished a strong drive giving Ulm an 80-79 lead. A Bruce Fields basket pushed Wels back up 81-79 before Christian Burns took the lead back for Ulm 82-81. Jason Conley sank two more free throws as Wels went up 83-82. Rocky Trice responded with two foul shots of his own giving Ulm an 84-83 lead. Bruce Fields banked in two free throws as Wels took the lead 85-84. Rocky Trice scored in the lane and Conley hit one foul shot evening the score at 86 with one minute in overtime. Ulm came up with an empty possession and relied on their defense for a stop. Wels put the ball in Jason Conley's hands and he milked the clock at the top. Cooly, Conley dribbled in and drilled a game-deciding top of the key three. Ulm's attempt to tie missed and Conley iced the game with one free throw making the 90-86 final. A great preseason game for both teams filled with excellent situational basketball, Saturday nights ratiopharm Ulm effort was very positive and something to build on. The team returned to their hotel in the center of the city, enjoyed a nice italian dinner and rested for Sunday's road trip to Gmunden.

Sunday afternoon, ratiopharm Ulm battled Allianz Gmunden Swans in an excellent preseason game in Gmunden. Austrian legend Deteri Mayes topscored for the Swans with 29 points while sharpshooting Lithuania forward Vilius Gasbys drilled 7 of 9 threes to add 28 to the Gmunden effort in their 97-89 win. ratiopharm Ulm's Christian Burns was in top form scoring 24 points with 7 rebounds while Coleman Collins added a strong 21 points with 6 boards. Rocky Trice totaled 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals while Sebastian Betz had 13 points and Kevin Kanaskie chipped in 10 points 5 assists. Gmunden started strong applying physical defense and good ballpressure to the shorthanded Ulm team. The Swans opened a 14-10 lead which developed into a 27-22 advantage after one quarter. Gmunden used excellent perimeter shooting to stretch their lead to 43-32 midway through the second quarter. But Ulm rallied to outscore the hosts 9-3 as Rocky Trice and Coleman Collins sparked a late first half run cutting the deficit to 46-41 at half. In the third, Ulm's execution improved and the teams defense strengthened. Chrisitan Burns finished several athletic drives and Ulm's defense created transition opportunities. Kevin Kanaskie banked in a drive off glass and scored in transition. Ulm's efforts cut the score to 57-55 at the five minute mark of the third. Ulm took the lead 59-58 on a Rocky Trice basket and went up 61-58 after Christian Burns scored on a baseline stickback. Kevin Kanaskie sank two free throws pushing Ulm up 63-58. Gmunden huddled in a timeout. Ulm went to their bench to finish the third quarter and the young players gained valuable experience. But several plays allowed Gmunden to rebuild their lead to 68-65 on a 10-2 run at the end of the third. Re-entering the starting five, Ulm was ready for a great fourth quarter. Back to back threes from Mayes and Gasbys pushed the Swans ahead 74-65 but Sebastian Betz, Rocky Trice, Coleman Collins and Christian Burns answered with buckets pulling Ulm back within one 74-73. A three point play from Gmunden's Dan Oppland gave Gmunden a 77-73 lead but Coleman Collins responded with a beautiful athletic finish to a strong drive. Mayes beat the shot clock buzzer with a pullup J before Gasbys slipped free from Ulm defenders for an open three giving Gmunden an 82-77 lead. Collins scored again on a strong drive pulling Ulm within 82-79. Oppland scored and Christian Burns powered to the basket as Ulm trailed 84-81. Another Gasbys three stretched the Swans lead to 87-81 and Ulm called timeout. Fatigue slowed the Ulm attack as Gmunden capitalized in the mid fourth quarter but the shorthanded Ulm team ralled together and came back. Two Coleman Collins free throws and a Sebastian Betz right wing transition three brought Ulm right back to 87-86 forcing a Gmunden timeout. Veteran Deteri Mayes spoiled two excellent Ulm defensive possessions with late clock pullup floaters and the Swans held a 91-86 lead. Ulm's Kevin Kanaskie drilled a clutch top of the key three and Ulm was within one basket 91-89. After a defensive stop, Ulm had possession and opportunity to tie with 1:20 to play. Trailing 91-89, Ulm's Kevin Kanaskie drove strong along the left baseline but his finish rimmed out into the hands of Gmunden's Mayes who dribbled the length of the floor for a key breakaway basket. After a timeout, Ulm's Sebastian Betz misfired on a three point from the right corner and Ulm turned to the fouling game. Gmunden iced the game at the foul line with Mayes sinking key shots. An excellent preseason game filled with game-situations that will continue to help the young, newly formed Ulm team grow, Sunday's preseason game in Gmunden was a terrific effort from ratiopharm Ulm.
