Ulm and Bamberg met earlier this preseason in a scrimmage at JAKO Arena. In the game, ratiopharm Ulm lost power forward Christian Burns to an ankle injury early in the second half and the shorthanded Ulm squad fell off pace as brose Baskets Bamberg raced to an 85-69 victory Saturday September 26th. Both teams started strong and finished the first quarter even at 21. Elton Brown powered to 8 points 3 boards in the first quarter leading Bamberg while Rocky Trice, Coleman Collins and Christian Burns scored 6 points apiece to pace Ulm. Making an early second quarter run, Ulm took the lead 33-30 at the 5 minute mark as Christian Burns exploded for 15 points 7 boards in the first half. Bamberg battled back and made a late first half run that helped them take a 43-36 halftime lead. Unfortunately for Ulm, early in the third, Burns went down with an ankle injury forcing him to miss the remainder of the game. Bamberg capitalized and went on a 10-0 run to take control early in the third. Hot shooting and strong team play characterized the Bamberg attack. After three, Bamberg pushed their lead to 62-48 and cruised to the 85-69 scrimmage win. Coleman Collins led Ulm's attack with 22 points 4 rebounds while Rocky Trice added 14 points 4 boards. In his first preseason action with Ulm, forward Robin Benzing hit 3 of 7 shots to score 8 points with 2 rebounds 2 steals and 1 block in 33 minutes. John Bryant posted 3 points 3 boards 3 steals and 2 blocks in 22 minutes of action after coming back from his early preseason back problem. Ulm's Kevin Kanaskie dished out a game best 9 assists. Bamberg outrebounded Ulm 39-26 and shot 53% compared with Ulm's 40% in the game. Ulm hit 20 of 24 free throws (83%). Bamberg's 2009-2010 roster has a quality mix of returning players and talented additions as head coach Chris Fleming looks to take his team back to the playoffs. Leading the list of newcomers is scoring wing Casey Jacobsen who won the Bundesliga Best Offensive Player award with Bamberg in 2006-2007 when they won the Bundesliga championship. After playing last season with ALBA Berlin, the former Stanford standout returns to Bamberg and will be a major factor in the teams success. A talented player with 4 years of NBA experience, Jacobsen is a go-to scoring threat and looks to bring Bamberg to the top of the Bundesliga. Along with Casey Jacobsen, talented combo guard Brian Roberts joins the Bamberg team and will provide a skillful scoring threat at both backcourt positions. Following an outstanding college career at the University of Dayton, Roberts played for Galil Gailboa in Israel as a rookie last season. The other top new addition is talented young German post player Tibor Pleiss. A skilled young big man who played last season in Koeln, Pleiss fits into the Bamberg rotation as a backup for the front court. Tibor's size and skill make him a talent with potential for the highest levels in the game.

ratiopharm Ulm post man John Bryant is prepared for a physical game Wednesday night in Bamberg.
Bamberg's returning players form one of the top teams in the Bundesliga. After overcoming injuries early last season, point guard John Goldsberry returned to the team and helped them get on track eventually reaching the playoffs. A talented playmaker who distributes well on offense while competing on the defensive end, Goldsberry has been a key figure for Bamberg and will be their floor general this season. Unfortunately for Bamberg, Goldsberry was injured in their recent loss to ALBA Berlin forcing him to miss extended amount of time. As a replacement, Bamberg inked talented playmaker Anton Gavel for one month. Gavel starred in the Bundesliga before played successful seasons in Karlsruhe and Giessen before embarking on an international adventure that took him to the ACB in Spain. Three important post players --- Predrag Suput, Elton Brown and Eric Taylor --- return to Bamberg providing continuity and talent. Among the best offensive players in the Bundesliga, Suput can score on the block or face up and play from the perimeter making him a tough matchup. A physical and talented scorer on the block, Elton Brown adds toughness to the team and has established himself as a top post man in the Bundesliga. Veteran Eric Taylor has been a big part of successful teams in Leverkusen and Bamberg and the big lefty does many little things that help a team win. On the perimeter, depth comes from veteran shooter Robert Garrett, talented young combo guard Karsten Tadda and hardworking wing Beckham Wyrick. Bamberg's talented roster is excited about the season and looking forward to reaching the playoffs once again.

ratiopharm Ulm sharpshooter Lee Humphrey has hit 13 of his last 17 threes in the last two games!
This season, Bamberg has opened with a 3-6 record after opening with a hardfought 67-55 road loss to defending Bundesliga champions Ewe Baskets Oldenburg Saturday October 10th before returning home to JAKO Arena to beat Walter Tigers Tubingen 84-75 Monday night October 12th. After the 76-75 Ulm win over Bamberg, brose Baskets went into Artland and beat the Dragons 74-68 October 25th. A special win for Head coach Chris Fleming, beating his former team in Artland also was a terrific road win for Bamberg. But after the tough road win in Artland, Bamberg dropped 4 straight games falling 84-80 in Frankfurt November 1st, dropping an 81-75 road game at MBC November 4th and losing back to back home games to ALBA Berlin 62-44 November 8th and 80-69 at home against Bonn November 11th. The tough early season schedule resulted in the slow Bamberg start, but the injury to point guard John Goldsberry early in the ALBA Berlin game hit Bamberg hard. Quickly reacting and signing high-level point guard Anton Gavel, Bamberg bounced back with a hardfought overtime road win in Dusseldorf Saturday night November 14th. Stepping up big-time in the Dusseldorf win was Bamberg guard Brian Roberts who hit 9 of 10 shots from the floor to topscore with 25 points including a clutch top of the key three that tied the game sending it to overtime where Bamberg earned the win.

ratiopharm Ulm post man Coleman Collins
Meanwhile, ratiopharm Ulm looks to bounce back from Saturdays hardfought road loss to EnBW Ludwigsburg in the Schwabische Derby. Ulm controlled the game with a strong performance for 38 minutes before a late Ludwigsburg run overtook the lead to take the win. Preparing for another intense, physical matchup against brose Baskets Bamberg, ratiopharm Ulm has received excellent play over the last few games from several players including Lee Humphrey and Rocky Trice. Hitting 13 of his last 17 threes over the past two games, Lee Humphrey has sparked Ulm's offense with tough perimeter shots. Meanwhile, Rocky Trice consistently has been an impact player on both ends of the floor for Ulm. The big challenge for ratiopharm Ulm Wednesday is in the paint as the physical Bamberg front line features excellent players in Elton Brown, Predrag Suput and the talented young Tibor Pleiss. Ulm aims for strong post play after being outscored 62-16 last weekend in Ludwigsburg. Along with a strong effort from starters Coleman Collins and Christian Burns, Ulm looks for energy and effort off the bench from John Bryant and a physical effort from rookie forward Robin Benzing to combat the tough Bamberg frontcourt.

ratiopharm Ulm wing Sebastian Betz is likely to miss Wednesday nights game in Bamberg with a back injury.
For Wednesday nights game against brose Baskets Bamberg at JAKO Arena, ratiopharm Ulm will likely be without hardworking wing Sebastian Betz who is sidelined with a back problem. Always excited to face his former Bamberg team, Basti Betz missed practice Monday and Tuesday resting and recovering and his return to action is hopefully soon.

Wednesday night, ratiopharm Ulm meets their next challenge as they face brose Baskets Bamberg for a rematch at JAKO Arena in Bamberg. Ulm and Bamberg enter the midweek game at three wins on the young Bundesliga season. With both teams hungry for a win, Wednesday night will be a fight for a fourth.
