ULM FIGHTS FOR 102-97 WIN IN MUNICH

ratiopharm Ulm exploded out of the halftime lockerroom with an 11-0 run and eventually opened a 23 point lead (70-47) midway through the third quarter before withstanding a furious fourth quarter comeback culminating when Peter Heizer sank two clutch free throws with three seconds remaining to ice a 102-97 road win over Bayern Munich Sunday afternoon in 2.Bundesliga South basketball action.  Improving to 16-4 on the season, Ulm shot a sizzling 62% for the game including an outstanding 11-22 (50%) from three point range.  Forward Florian Mobius topscored for Ulm with 19 points including several big baskets down the stretch and Shaheen Holloway added 17 points and 6 assists.

Florian Mobius played strong to finish with 19pts leading Ulm

Both teams suffered from inconsistent officiating on the evening.

Ulm started slowly as they adjusted to Bayern Munich pressure defense.  Shaheen Holloway was whistled for two fast fouls minutes into the game.  Enter Christian Grosse.  Trailing early 11-4, Emeka Erege helped Ulm fight back with strong drives, free throws and tip ins.  Grosse made positive plays continuing his strong play from recent weeks ---   the young Ulmer guard hit for 8 points with 2 three pointers in important first half minutes as Holloway was on the bench strapped with fouls.  Pulling ahead, Ulm took control toward the end of the first quarter as center Maksym Shtein scored consecutive baskets inside.  After one, Ulm held a 25-20 lead.

Building to a double digit advantage, Ulm used back to back threes from Kenny Price and Christian Grosse to ignite another run setting the score at 37-26.  Recently signed combo guard Marco Radulovic sank a three cutting into the lead, but Ulm maintained the cushion.  Bayern Munich's Jay Thomas, an athletic guard, attacked Ulm defenders in transition and off penetration for baskets.  Top young point man Sebastian Kling also showed why he is renowed as an excellent prospect --- pushing the ball in transition or driving hard and spining into the lane to make plays, Kling finished drives for layups and dropped off 4 assists in the first half.

With under one minute to play in the half, Ulm defenders poked loose a steal.  Shaheen Holloway snared the ball and began weaving through Bayern Munich defenders in a coast to coast high speed dribbling exhibition.  Attacking the rim, Holloway sliced past the lone remaining opposition before laying the ball in.  Out of no where, the New York City playmaker was called for a travel.  AMAZED, Ulm head coach Mike Taylor had seen enough and an intense discussion ensued.  Officials awarded Mike T with a T for his heated debate.  After tempers cooled, Jan Stephan stepped to the foul line to shoot the technicals --- he bricked them both.  However, Bayern Munich point man Sebastian Kling made a key play to finish the half.  Isolating against Holloway, who was playing smart defense with 2 fouls, Kling drove hard to his right before using his patented spin-against the defenders momentum to get into the lane. Slow in help defense, Ulm defenders were late clogging the lane.  Kling athletically layed the ball in off the glass cutting the halftime score to Ulm 52 Munich 45.

Regrouping at halftime, Ulm players were determined to dictate tempo to open the third quarter.  Adjusting to the physical play would be key for Ulm success in the second half.  After shooting 66% from the floor in the first 20 minutes and outrebounding Bayern Munich 18-9, Ulm saw the only thing keeping Munich in the game was their excellent 15-18 first half free throw shooting.

Maksym Shtein was strong in the post for Ulm scoring 15pts with 6 boards

From the second half inbound, Ulm broke the game open.  A slashing drive from Shaheen Holloway opened second half scoring and a crafty steal from Kenny Price on the inbound fueled the flames.  Florian Mobius sank a three and finished a basket inside.  Holloway hit two three pointers and Ulm held a seemingly insurmountable 70-47 lead.  The 32-24 third quarter had Ulm ready to deliver a knockout blow to a staggering Bayern Munich.  At the end of three, Ulm led 84-69.

To Bayern Munich's credit, their team fought back with tremendous intensity.  However, at various points in the fourth quarter, German team handball tactics would have been more appropriate and applicable to the action. If adjusting to physical play was a key for Ulm, adjusting to the inconsistent officiating was critical for both teams.  Whether Jay Thomas mugging Kenny Price at halfcourt or Shaheen Holloway getting physically hammered in a trap, referees overlooked overly aggressive defensive plays.  Clear fouls were not called, yet several phantom fouls were whistled on defenders.  Both teams suffered.  Munich seemed to capitalize.  Emeka Erege fouled out with just under 5 minutes to play as the Ulm lead began to slip away.  Continually trying to play strong through contact, Ulm players fought hard as officials allowed them to be abused by Bayern Munich.  Struggling to execute against the physical defense, Ulm's offense slowed.  Turnovers proved costly.  Munich's confidence grew as they whiddled away at the deficit.  Kling continued to attack and Henning Gutt stepped his game up.  Driving hard baseline, the physical German four man hammered home a strong dunk over Florian Mobius as he posterized the Ulm power forward.  Momentum swelled like a whirlpool as the clock ticked into the closing minutes.  With minutes remaining and a comeback imminent, Ulm clinged to a slight 96-90 advantage.

Maksym Shtein hammered Jay Thomas fouling out as he prevented an easy layup with one minute left.  Thomas hit only one free throw pulling Munich to within one 98-97.  Shaheen Holloway sank two free throws after being fouled extending Ulm's advantage to three at 100-97.  In the games critical possession, Jan Stephan shot a contested three from the left corner over a challenging Kenny Price.  Bouncing hard off the back of the rim, the ball floated toward the left baseline and four players gave everything they had for it.  Deflecting off Florian Mobius, Bayern Munich regained possession.

Kenny Price hit 5 three pointers in Ulm's win

Entering the ball, Bayern Munich put the ball inside to Gutt looking for a clutch post score.  However, working against a double team, Gutt was called for a travel giving Ulm the ball back with 12 seconds to play and a 3 point lead.  From a Bayern Munich perspective, this was clearly a difficult call to deal with.  It seemed the only thing consistent about the officaiting on the evening was that it was consistently inconsistent.

Calling timeout to set up their inbound play, Ulm set up a "run-out" against full court pressure designed to get an immediate foul.  With no free safety, Ulm's Shaheen Holloway darted up the right sideline on a fly pattern.  Florian Mobius fired a pass sailing smoothly over the Munich defense sending Holloway free for a breakaway.  Intelligently, Sha backed the ball out playing keep away avoiding the foul to eat the clock.  As Munich players chased Holloway, he fired a pass to Kenny Price who immediately moved the ball to an unguarded Peter Heizer.  Finally, the defense caught up to the ball and fouled Heizer with 3 seconds to play.  The veteran Ulm guard stepped to the line and cooly sank two clutch free throws to seal the 102-97 win.

Taylorhoops.com Player of the Game Florian Mobius topscored with 19 points on 7 for 8 floor shooting.  Holloway's 17 points and 6 dimes was closely followed by Kenny Price's 16 points on 5 of 9 three point shooting.  Emeka Erege and Maksym Shtein added 15 points and 6 boards apiece while Peter Heizer contributed 10 including the clutch free throws.  For Bayern Munich, Henning Gutt led the team in scoring with 18 points and a team best 6 rebounds while Jay Thomas added 17 points.  Jochen Losch (16), Sebastian Kling (14), Stephan Fischer (12) and Jan Stephan (12) also reached double figures for the home team.

Both teams shot free throws extremely well (Ulm hitting 25 of 33 for 76% and Bayern Munich 26 of 32 for 81%) and both teams shot high percentages from the floor (Ulm 62% and Bayern Munich 54%.  Ulm outrebounded Bayern Munich 30-21.
