ratiopharm Ulm Takes on Bayreuth Tuesday! After a successful preseason opening win Saturday night at Pro A Nordlingen, ratiopharm Ulm will travel to Bayreuth Tuesday night for their second exhibition game. Excited to meet the always good Bayreuth team, Ulm will get a boost from the return of Captain Emeka Erege who sat out the entire first week of preseasn resting a slight muscle strain. With the complete lineup active, ratiopharm Ulm aims to make progress during their second week together which starts with their second game.
Ulm Captain Emeka Erege talks with Bayreuth F Christoph Tetzner after the teams met in April 2006. Erege returned to practice Monday and is excited about getting back to action! Bayreuth and Ulm enjoy rich basketball history and in recent seasons produced some outstanding games while competitors in the 2.Bundesliga South. For instance, during Ulm's "Aufsteig" season of 2005-2006, it took a heroic effort for Ulm to earn a 105-95 overtime road win in Bayreuth in a game which turned out to be a turning point in sealing the 2.Bundesliga South title. What made the victory so sweet was the adversity of the strong Bayreuth team combined with the memory of the 2004-2005 loss in Bayreuth which saw Marco Amelow's top Ulm 83-69.
Ulm Power Forward Jeff Gibbs has been a strong leader for his team in preseason. A consistent top tier 2.Bundesliga South team, BBC Bayreuth strengthened their squad this offseason with key extensions and qualityadditions. The teams quarterback and floor general is Ty Harrelson who has emerged as an elite point guard in German basketball. After a terrific season in Langen, Harrelson made immediate impact with his new team in Bayreuth. Ty's return is a huge step for Bayreuth's efforts to be a Pro A power. Along with Harrelson, veteran Bayreuth faces Christoph Tetzner, Sebastian Hanel, Sebastian Schoch, Lars Grubler and Johannes Schlamminger return to bolster the team with experience and knowledge of each other. The versatile Tetzner is an inside-outside wing who was in top form during the classic Ulm-Bayreuth matchup from 2005-2006. Hanel, another active forward, runs the floor effectively and brings great energy to his team. Schoch is a hardworking team leader who adds depth. Grubler is a physical big man with Bundesliga experience and Schlamminger is a tenacious defender who inspires his teammates. Along with these veteran players, three key additions provide Bayreuth with tremendous potential in Pro A. Veteran center Tim Nees joins BBC from Bundesliga "Absteiger" (relegated) Nurnberg and is an immediate factor with his size and skill alone. The smooth scoring wing Jaivon Harris who starred for the last three seasons in Chemnitz moves to Pro A rival Bayreuth and should be a fantastic addition with Harrelson in the backcourt. Finally, rookie guard Brandon Chappell joins the team from Lamar University. Together, the lineup looks to be among the top Pro A teams assembled this offseason and with their experience together, Head Coach Marco Amelow could enjoy another top season in Bayreuth. Meanwhile, ratiopharm Ulm is focused for development and improvement throughout the preseason. After the teams successful debut in Nordlingen, Ulm aims to make strides in all aspects of their game as the players gain a greater grasp of the teams systems. Figuring out how they can contribute to Ulm TEAM success, all 11 players will be challenged throughout the week to sharpen their skills, improve their conditioning and master the teams system. And considering challenges, Tuesday nights game in Bayreuth will be exactly what Ulm is looking for in the second exhibition game of preseason.
