ratiopharm Ulm travels to the north central German city of Braunschweig for their weekend road trip in Bundesliga Game Day 19. With positive momentum from last weekends big win over brose Baskets Bamberg, Ulm and the Phantoms tip off 7pm Saturday night January 31st in Volkswagonhalle. Both ratiopharm Ulm and NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig enter Saturday nights game with their sights set on a win.

After ratiopharm Ulm's excellent team effort in last Saturday's home win over Bamberg, a healthy Ulm team is energized from their recent success and excited about upcoming challenges. With hardwork in practice and an emphasis on individual improvement and team development, ratiopharm Ulm enters Saturday's road game in Volkswagonhalle on a positive.

Saturdays opponent, NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig features a talented lineup with experience and athleticism. All star forward Andrew Drevo is a talented perimeter shooting post player and has produced 10.9ppg 6.1reb while shooting 39% from three and 73% from the foul line. Also making a major impact for the Phantoms, skilled post player Kyle Visser has given his team 9.8ppg 5.8reb as a go-to scorer inside. On the perimeter, point guard Will Franklin has led the attack scoring a team best 12.9ppg while dishing out 3.9ast in his first season with the Phantoms. Fellow first year Phantom, Dustin Salisbery is a skilled scoring wing who averages 11.3ppg 3.4reb and gives his team a go-to scorer from the perimeter. Former Ulm star Jonathan Levy has provided his Braunschweig team with 9.2ppg 3.5reb along with outstanding defense this year. The Phantoms turn to several key players from their bench including Michael Flowers, Nils Mittmann, Jeremy Crouch and Jason Cain. A terrific perimeter defender, Flowers returned to the Phantoms lineup after an early season injury and has been a defensive-stopper for their team. A veteran post player with excellent shooting touch, Mittmann can stretch defenses with his three point shot and give his team an energy boost with his outstanding defensive effort. Crouch also is a designated three point shooter who has been hot in recent games and Cain is a hardworking post man who brings excellent energy and competitive fight to the floor. Last week in Bremerhaven, Cain was tangled up with Eisbaren big man Jared Reiner which eventually led to an alleged kicking incident and Cain's ejection from the game.

Braunschweig's 2008-2009 season opened with 2 losses at home to Bremerhaven 79-69 September 20th and then 84-56 September 27th at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. The Phantoms first win was a 59-49 victory over BG74 Gottingen October 4th. Braunschweig lost 62-61 in Ludwigsburg October 12th but bounced back to beat Paderborn 78-77 in overtime at Volkswagonhalle October 19th. That victory triggered three more wins in a row as the Phantoms topped Nordlingen 69-63 on the road October 24th before returning home to top Trier 87-76 October 26th then beat Walter Tigers Tubingen 73-56 November 8th. But after the four game win streak that improved Braunschweig to 5-3, the Phantoms fell victim to a 4 game losing streak. Braunschweig fell 74-63 at home to Dusseldorf Giants November 16th, lost 81-75 November 23rd at Ballsporthalle in Frankfurt to the Deutsche Bank Skyliners, dropped a tough 72-70 decision at home to Ewe Baskets Oldenburg November 28th and lost a controversial 64-63 road game to ALBA Berlin December 6th at O2 World. With a 5-7 record, Braunschweig won three of their next four as they beat the Artland Dragons 75-66 at home December 13th before falling December 18th at Koln 79-73 in their last game before Christmas break. January 8th, the Phantoms beat Giessen 79-68 and then earned a big home win over Telekom Baskets Bonn 74-68 January 11th. But Braunschweig has lost their last two Bundesliga games falling 80-62 on the road at JAKO Arena in Bamberg January 16th and losing last weekend on the road in Bremerhaven 96-84 Sunday January 25th. At 8-10, the Phantoms are in the thick of the race for a playoff spot and look to make their playoff push in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, Ulm's 2008-2009 season opened with several strong performances including their first matchup against Braunschweig. Like earlier in the season, Ulm enters their game this weekend against Braunschweig feeling good after a strong performance against Bamberg. Looking back to that first game with the Phantoms, ratiopharm Ulm entered their home opener at Sportszentrum Kuhberg riding the wave of momentum from their season opening Septenber 24th upset win in Bamberg. Saturday night September 27th, ratiopharm Ulm rode that wave rolling to a convincing 84-56 home win over NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig before a packed Sportszentrum Kuhberg. All Star Power Forward Jeff Gibbs powered his way to 21 points 8 rebounds, but it was the strength of Ulm's team effort and defense that keyed the exciting home win.

The Phantoms finished last season 17-17 and picked up two wins in a sweep over ratiopharm Ulm. Last year, in the season opener for both teams, NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig used a strong fourth quarter to edge ratiopharm Ulm 75-70 at Volkswagonhalle in Braunschweig. Later in the season, the Phantoms took a 90-86 road win over Ulm in Sportszentrum Kuhberg.

In the 2006-2007 season, the Phantoms haunted Ulm, edging the hosts in a tight 83-80 game in Ulm. Jeff Gibbs was phenomenal in the game scoring 29 points with 9 rebounds. Ulm bounced back and beat Braunschweig 85-74 in Overtime March 28th.

Both ratiopharm Ulm and NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig enter Saturday nights game focused for an important win. With 16 games remaining in the Bundesliga regular season, both teams are battling for playoff position and every game counts. While the competition on the court will be heated and intense, Saturdays meeting holds special meaning for several players on both sidesl. Former Ulm guard Jonathan Levy was a central figure in helping ratiopharm Ulm win the 2.Bundesliga South championship in 2005-2006 and played a major part in helping Ulm establish themselves in the Bundesliga in the 2006-2007 season. A popular teammate and fan favorite, Levy moved onto Braunschweig and is in his second season with the Phantoms. Former Ulm team captain Nils Mittmann also faces his former team and was also a popular player and fan favorite during his time playing with ratiopharm Ulm under Rainer Bauer in the 2.Bundesliga South. Finally, on the Ulm side, rookie point guard Per Gunther played under Phantoms head coach Emir Mutapcic with the German U20 National team last summer in Romania. For these players, Saturday nights Bundesliga game takes on extra-special meaning.
ratiopharm Ulm guard Sebastian Betz continues to develop and is ready for a great second half of the season.
Ulm's road trip plans include a mid-day Friday departure on their double-decker team bus going north through beautiful Germany to the north-central city of Braunschweig. Checking into the team hotel, Ulm will practice at Volkswagonhalle 8-930pm. According to Ulm routine, the team will return to the hotel for team dinner, meeting and scouting report test according to the regular night before game program. Saturday mornings shoot around preceeds the pregame meal as the team builds up for the 7pm tip.

Ulm rookie point guard Per Gunther played a terrific first start in Bamberg Wednesday, now the 20 year old rookie meets his National team coach Muki Mutapcic as ratiopharm Ulm hosts NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig Saturday night. Per played under Mutapcic this summer and the U20 national team won their qualifying tournament in Romania.
FORMER ULMERS!
When Braunschweig visits Ulm this weekend, it will be a return to Sportszentrum Kuhberg for former Ulmers Jonathan Levy and Nils Mittmann. Levy helped lead the team to the 'Aufsteig' in 2005-2006 and played with the team for the first Bundesliga season of 2006-2007 while Mittmann served as captain for the 2.bundesliga south teams of 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.
