ULM Hits Road to Breitengussbach Sunday!

ratiopharm Ulm travels east to the outskirts of Bamberg for a 6pm Sunday evening tipoff against TSV Breitengussbach in Game Day 7 of 2.Bundesliga South basketball action.  The farm club for Bundesliga champ and current Euroleague team GHP Bamberg, Breitengussbach features several top young talents, has earned an excellent reputation for developing young German basketball players and is always a tough team in their building.  Ulm's strong start to the season will be tested Sunday but 2.Bundesliga South Player of the Month for October Jeff Gibbs and his tight Ulm teammates aim to be up for the challenge.

Mike T tells Jeff Gibbs he was named 2.Bundesliga South Player of the Month for October.

ratiopharm Ulm heads east only 10km north of Bamberg for a 2.Bundesliga South matchup with TSV Breitengussbach 6pm Sunday evening at Hans-Jung-Halle in Breitengussbach.  A traditional developmental team, Breitengussbach serves as a farm team for GHP Bamberg, current German Bundesliga Champion and Euroleague participant.  Several young talents will suit up for Breitengussbach Sunday along with a handful of program players who give the Breitengussbach continuity.  Last season, the Bamberg farm club struggled to stay in the 2.Bundesliga eventually earning their ticket with a strong surge late in the year.  Their connection with Bamberg and their reputation for developing top young talent create interest in the team and provides incentive for players.

Ulm's Danish Dynamite, Martin Thuesen has been on point!

This season, under new head coach Pure Radomirovic, an experienced coach working with the German youth national program, Breitengussbach has given major minutes to several top young players.  Outstanding young player Sajmen Hauer, a starting PG on the Under 18 German National team, is a key part of the future of Bamberg basketball and plays with a double-lisence for both GHP Bamberg and TSV Breitengussbach.   Thursday night, the 18yr old talent traveled with GHP Bamberg for their EuroLeague contest at Italian power Benetton Treviso.  A clever ballhandler with nice shooting stroke, Hauer averages 6.7ppg and 4.2ast for Breitengussbach and has made one appearance playing against Karlsruhe for 3:53 for with Bamberg.  Another top young talent playing in the Bamberg organization with a double-lisence is Big big man Michael Schroeder.  The 6'10 center averages 5.5ppg and 3.2reb for Breitengussbach while also making one appearance against Karlsruhe for big club GHP Bamberg.  Schroeder is a big physical back to the basket prospect who rebounds well and plays strong defense.  Shooting guard Sebastian Betz has shown excellent improvement this season as he plays more minutes and looks to score.  The young wing averages 10.8ppg 5.3reb while shooting 43% from three range and 83% from the foul line.

But Breitengussbach boasts more than top youth players.  Captain and veteran small forward Henrik Gese has tremendous experience and adds a terriffic offensive threat to the team.  Gese, a smart player, has a unique knack for hitting tough well-guarded shots mostly due to his excellent pull-up J and high release point.  Henrik is a threat every opposing team must account for.  American big man Brian Boxler, a skilled inside outside lefty scorer averaging a team best 15.5ppg and 8.2reb, hits 43% percent from three and 81% from the line.  Boxler enjoyed an strong season last year playing for Iserlohn in the 2.Bundesliga North and has been impressive in his initial 2.Bundesliga South games.  Adding depth to the 'Gussbach squad, scrappy point man Felix Ferner, coaches son Adam Radomirivic, Alexej Bodnar and Johannes Betz come off the bench for action.

The week has been challenging for the farm team.  Skilled American Center Tim Frost, who was scoring 12.8ppg with 8.8reb, left the team for a new contract in Uraguay.  Although Breitengussbach hopes to have a new American (possibly a 3 or 4 man), it is unsure if they will sign one in time for Sunday's game against Ulm.  With Frost flying to South America for his new team, Hauer missing training as he traveled to Treviso with Bamberg and Sebastian Betz very sick, Breitengussbach struggled to practice effectively with only 5 or 6 players available.  No matter what adversity Breitengussbach encounters, they will clearly be ready for ratiopharm Ulm come tipoff time Sunday.

Maksym Shtein looks forward to the good Breitengussbach BIG men.

ratiopharm Ulm received some exciting news earlier this week as power forward Jeff Gibbs was recognized as 2.Bundesliga South Player of the Month for October.  The undersized 6'3 four man from Columbus Ohio and Otterbein College has been a key part of Ulm's strong start to the year.  Gibbs has powered his way to 19.2ppg and a league best 16.5 rebounds a game.  His production has given Gibbs an amazing 32.8 efficiency rating

.  Strong play from Ulm's top eight players has helped them to a 6-0 start and first place atop the early season standings by point differential over also unbeaten Chemnitz and Kaiserslautern.  Jonathan Levy leads the Ulmer team in scoring at 20.7ppg while Captain Emeka Erege adds a solid 14.2ppg 5.3reb and Center Maksym Shtein contributes a quality 12.8pts 6.3reb.  Off the bench Christian Grosse also provides a double-digit scoring option with 10ppg while shooting 40% from three and 84% from the line.  Jan Sprunken, Martin Thuesen and Florian Mobius have also been key contributors to the Ulm team success.

Sharpshooting Ulm guard Christian Grosse averages 10ppg hits 41% from three and drills 84% from the foul line off the Ulm bench.

With the 2005-2006 season in full swing and 20% complete, several interesting matchups will occur in Saturday nights 2.Bundesliga South action.  League pre-season favorite erdgas Baskets Jena travel to TV Langen to take on the Giraffes with newly signed point man Alvin Cruz.  Chemnitz puts their unbeaten record on the line at MTV Stuttgart while Heidelberg heads to Crailsheim and TV Lich is at Nordlingen.  Bayreuth goes to Weiden for a local derby and Kaiserslautern heads to Ehingen for a Sunday road game.
