ratiopharm Ulm heads north to Bremerhaven for a Sunday January 2nd New Years Matchup against the Eisbaren.  Making their second road trip to northwest Germany this week, ratiopharm Ulm is focused for their next challenging away game against the talented Eisbaren in Stadthalle Bremerhaven.  After hosting a December 26th Christmas Game at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm, ratiopharm Ulm looks forward to another holday game as they tip off 2011 in Bremerhaven.

At 9-7, Bremerhaven opened with back to back wins beating Dusseldorf 96-70 October 1st at home and MBC 86-78 on the road October 8th.  Bremerhaven suffered a three game losing streak falling in Bamberg 75-66 October 10th, losing 107-77 at home to Hagen October 15th and dropping an 81-66 road loss in Frankfurt October 17th.  Bremerhaven picked up back to back wins edging Trier 73-72 October 24th before beating NewYorker Phantoms Braunschweig 83-79 October 29th in Braunschweig.  Bonn beat Bremerhaven 75-71 November 10th in Bremerhaven before the Eisbaren won four straight games topping Artland 78-76 November 13th in Quakenbruck, beating EnBW Ludwigsburg 80-70 at home November 21st, handling LTi Giessen 46ers 83-79 November 27th in Giessen before earning an 87-56 home win over Bayreuth December 3rd.  Bremerhaven dropped three straight games falling 85-82 in Gottingen December 10th, losing 87-74 to rival Oldenburg at home December 18th and losing 85-59 to ALBA Berlin in a Christmas Game December 26th in Berlin.  Most recently, Bremerhaven won 72-60 Wednesday night over Walter Tigers Tubingen December 29th in Bremerhaven. 

ratiopharm Ulm point guard Per Gunther enjoyed a terrific start to the 2010-2011 season earning an All Star Nomination.

After struggling to a 7-27 record in the 2008-2009 season, Bremerhaven turned it around impressively in 2009-2010 winning 21 games and advancing to the Bundesliga SemiFinals before bowing out to Frankfurt in a full five game series.  This season Head Coach Doug Spradley has rebuilt his roster with quality.  Torrell Martin (16.3ppg 7.4reb 43% threes) ranks as one of the most efficient players in the Bundesliga and always plays with tremendous intensity.  Scoring big man Craig Callahan (15.2ppg 4.1reb 30% threes) is one of the best inside-out post players in the Bundesliga and has established himself as a key weapon for the Eisbaren.  Sharpshooting post man Andrew Drevo (10.2ppg 5.1reb) also returns to Bremerhaven and provides an experienced and talented perimeter threat from the frontcourt.  Point guard Donald Copeland (8.1ppg 3.9ast 35% threes) runs the show for Bremerhaven and is crafty in the lane.  The improving Phillip Schwethelm (8.7ppg 3.7reb 50%threes) is playing well with more responsibility in the team and provides a terrific three point threat.  Center Sean Denison (8ppg 3.9reb) has given Bremerhaven good minutes in the post and the Canadian born big man is focused to face his former college teammate ratiopharm Ulm's John Bryant.  The two big men played the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons together with the Santa Clara Broncos.  Veteran wing Richard Chaney (5.2ppg 3.4reb 45% threes) moves north to Bremerhaven after successful stints in south Germany with Tubingen and Ludwigsburg. Backup PG duties belong to Jermaine Thomas (5.3ppg 2.9ast 50% threes) and the LaSalle product provides depth and has been a three point threat.  Energizing German wing Jan Lipke continues to spark the Eisbaren and has been with the team through highs and lows.  Finally, former Ulm center Maksym Shtein adds post depth with his physical play and crafty post moves on the block.  After helping ratiopharm Ulm earn the Aufstieg into the Bundesliga, Max played one season with Ulm before moving to Frankfurt and Trier over the last few years.

In recent seasons, ratiopharm Ulm and Bremerhaven have locked up for several exciting games.  Last year, ratiopharm Ulm swept both meetings from Bremerhaven.  In four seasons, Ulm and Bremerhaven have split games 4-4.

Febuary 27th, 2010, ratiopharm Ulm fans greeted former star player Jeff Gibbs back home to Sportszentrum Kuhberg as Bremerhaven visited Ulm  for a late Febuary game.  ratiopharm Ulm exploded to a 32 point first quarter building a 21 point lead before sealing a 99-87 home win over Eisbaren Bremerhaven on an historic evening at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. Captain Lee Humphrey drilled 5 of 7 threes topscoring with 20 points and power forward Christian Burns posted a strong 16 point 11 rebound double double leadng ratiopharm Ulm's terrific team performance that included 58% shooting and 12 of 21 from three for the game.  Beating Bremerhaven for the first time at Sportszentrum Kuhberg, ratiopharm Ulm sweeps their two games over the Eisbaren this season.  Taking positive steps toward establishing their own identity as the next generation of ratiopharm Ulm basketball, the young Ulm team earned a milestone victory in Saturday nights success for the successors.  Respecting the organizations past with the return of former star Jeff Gibbs and Bremerhaven, Ulm's next generation filled the present with fun, offensive fireworks and pointed toward a positive, bright future.

Earlier in the 2009-2010 season, ratiopharm Ulm earned a 'bounce back' road win over the Eisbaren.  After a 28 point home debacle gainst Dusseldorf on Friday night, no one expected ratiopharm Ulm to win in Bremerhaven two days later.  But ratiopharm Ulm rallied together and played with tremendous heart in earning a hardfought 85-80 road win over the Eisbaren Sunday afternoon November 1st, 2009 at Stadthalle Bremerhaven.  Christian Burns led the Ulm attack with a 22 point 7 rebound performance while Per Gunther and Coleman Collins added 14 points apiece, Lee Humphrey hit 3 of 5 threes for 12 points and Rocky Trice finished with 11 points 4 boards 5 steals in the Ulm win.  Ulm's young team showed tremendous heart in their 'bounce back win' Sunday in Bremerhaven.

In 2008-2009, with a playoff place secure, ratiopharm Ulm slipped to an 89-81 home loss to last place Eisbaren Bremerhaven Thursday evening April 30th, 2009 at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Bremerhaven's second quarter run helped the Eisbaren establish a 14 point lead.  Holding off Ulm's comeback attempt, Bremerhaven earned their 6th win of the season while ratiopharm Ulm is now 20-13.  All Star Power Forward Jeff Gibbs powered his way to a 20 point 16 rebound double double and Lee Humphrey hit 5 of 8 threes to add 19 points in the loss.

Earlier in 2008-2009, ratiopharm Ulm put six players in double figures in a hard-earned 90-86 road win over Eisbaren Bremerhaven Sunday November 23rd, 2008 at Stadthalle in Bremerhaven.  Ulm forward Romeo Travis scored a career high 25 points and Jeff Gibbs powered his way to an 18 point 11 rebound double double to pace Ulm production.  A late third quarter run sparked by 11 straight Jeff Gibbs points helped Ulm take a 68-60 lead into the fourth quarter before clutch plays and cool free throw shooting helped Ulm earn the win.

2007-2008 in Bremerhaven, ratiopharm Ulm beat Eisbaren Bremerhaven for the first time in their two seasons in the Bundesliga with an 80-70 victory, their first road win of the 2007-2008 season.  Konrad Wysocki was a perfect 6 for 6 from the floor and finished with a team best 20 points 10 rebounds followed by point guard Kyle Bailey with a well rounded 18 point 11 rebound 5 assist effort and All Star Jeff Gibbs with a powerful 17 points 10 boards and 5 blocks.  Trailing 54-48 heading into the fourth, Ulm outscored Bremerhaven 32-16 over the final ten minutes for the win

Later April 4th at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm, ratiopharm Ulm had plenty of chances to get hot in a Friday night showdown against Bremerhaven, but in the end cold shooting and solid Eisbaren play combined to put Ulm on ice in an 82-75 home loss.  Entering the game as the Bundesliga's top rated offense, Ulm struggled to 36% floor shooting including 9 for 35 (25%) from three while making only 10 of 20 from the foul line.  Ulm's cold shooting froze their fourth quarter comeback attempt as Bremerhaven earned the road win.

In the 2006-2007 season, Ulm was swept by Bremerhaven losing both contests between the two teams.  Last December, Ulm traveled up north to Bremerhaven and was pounded 92-65 as the Eisbaren dominated the game.  Back in Ulm in April, Ulm dropped an 84-74 game to the Eisbaren.  The game snapped ratiopharm Ulm's 8 game home winning streak.  Bryan Lucas and Jeff Gibbs were outstanding for Ulm. Lucas led the way with 19 points and 4 rebounds in a terrific effort while Gibbs collected an 18 point 18 rebound double double.

Several ratiopharm Ulm players have picked up their productivity in recent weeks including forward Robin Benzing who has risen to seventh in the Bundesliga in scoring at 14.6ppg.  Ulm center John Bryant ranks as the leagues sixth leading scorer at 14.8ppg, leads the Bundesliga in rebounding 10.4 and is statistically the leagues most effective player.  John also has recorded a league best 6 double-doubles.  Point guard Per Gunther ranks third in the league in free throw attempts and is hitting 87% from the charity stripe. After leading the Bundesliga in steals last season, Rocky Trice ranks 6th after joining Ulm 5 games into the 2010-2011 season. As a team, ratiopharm Ulm currently leads the Bundesliga in rebounding at 38.7 rebounds per game ranking first in defensive rebounding with 26.7 and tied for first in offensive rebounds per game at 11.9.  Ulm is fifth in scoring at 77.9ppg, fourth in blocks at 3.1, 9th in field goal percentage at 45.2% and 3rd in free throw percentage at 76.4%. Ulm's main emphasis has been reducing their turnovers which they rank second to last with 15.3 for the season.

ratiopharm Ulm looks to rises the next challenge in Bremerhaven after a hardfought defeat Wednesday night in Oldenburg.  After their competitive 84-79 road loss at Ewe Arena, ratiopharm Ulm took a bus back home trekking the 9 hours south through the night back to Ulm. After taking Thursday off, the team practiced and prepared Friday before enjoying New Years Celebrations at home in Ulm.  Flying up New Years Day Saturday January 1st, Ulm repeated the same trip from earlier in the week preparing for Oldenburg.

Offense: A team with quality and depth, Bremerhaven is an excellent perimeter shooting team with 3point threats from four positions.  Working through post men Callahan, Denison, Drevo and Shtein, Bremerhaven has an excellent high low game and Torrell Martin gives the Eisbaren a tremendous versatile weapon. PG Donald Copeland has been impressive as a playmaker for his team.  Depth is provided by pg Jermaine Thomas, energizing Jan Lipke and Richard Chaney.

Defense:  A physical hardnosed man to man defensive team, the imposing size and physical strength of the Bremerhaven frontcourt is a clear strength of the team.  Along with the tough man to man defense, Bremerhaven will play a 2-3 zone including sideline or endline situations.
