Hired by the Chemnitz 99ers in June 2001, Mike T left the comfortable assistant coaching ranks of the NCAA for an unknown challenge. Taking the reigns of a 10-12 regionalliga team, Taylor revamped the roster building the new team into a winner. 7-4 at Christmas, Mike T guided the 99ers to 11 straight wins including a memorable 105-96 victory over Nordlingen in the "Regionaliga Championship Game" the final week of the season. The win meant promotion earning Chemnitz a ticket to the 2.Bundesliga. Working through the hard times of life in a foreign country, especially the former east Germany, Taylor drew on the strength of many friends made in Chemnitz. American guard Sly McIntosh was the star of the show leading Chemnitz with several spectacular performances including a 48 point outburst in a November victory over Neu Ulm and a 36 point display in the Championship against Nordlingen. Celebrating that win and cutting down those nets are memories seared into Mike T after taking on and overcoming personal challenges throughout the season. The 99ers also won the Saxony Cup and finished with an impressive 28-5 record.
