Playing in the Qualification round this summer, the Czech National team will compete against rival country Slovakia, Cypress and Switzerland from July 14th through the 22nd. In preparation for the challenges, the Czech team will tentatively play exhibition games in Bulgaria, Lithuania and at home against Estonia. Joining the Czech team after summer recruiting in Las Vegas, the summer schedule fits perfectly for the Ulm preseason which tips off preparations for the 2010-2011 Beko Basketball Bundesliga season August 23rd.
A common dream of basketball brought Pavel Budinsky and Mike Taylor together as both coaches were interested in bringing the best from the European game and American game together. While coaching Chemnitz 99ers to the Regionaliga Southeast title in 2001-2002, Mike Taylor and Pavel Budinsky met through friendly games between the 99ers and Budinsky's 2 division Czech team Chomutov. Chemnitz and Chomutov played in the preseason and the 99ers held a training camp over Christmas break in Chomutov, Czech Republic. 40km apart, the two young coaches often visited one another throughout the season. Over the summer, Pavel visited the United States spending time with Mike while coaching for the Dodge City Legend in the USBL and working together at the Duke summer basketball camp. Staying in close contact over the years, the two coaches met several occassions with Mike visiting Pavel and family in Chomutov, meeting for lunch in Nurnberg during an off day one year and visiting Karlovy Vary Czech Republic together another. While Mike worked in Ulm, Pavel guided Decin to success in the Czech league before being named Head coach earlier this season. Visiting Ulm for the December 18th game against the Artland Dragons, Pavel first presented his plan to Thomas Stoll and the Ulm management. After careful thought and discussion, the Ulm management endorsed the idea and positively supported their head coach for the excellent opportunity.
Interestingly, Mike Taylor's first exposure to the European game also came in the Czech Republic while coaching a touring all star team of NCAA players through Planet Basketball in the summer of 2000. While an assistant coach at IUP, Taylor coached against the Czech national team in a friendly game in Pardubice before coaching against the Czech Junior National team in Prague. The tour continued from Czech Republic to Finland and the game has now brought Mike T back to Czech.
