Thursday September 10th, 2009 Ulm Hosts Fritz & Macziol Cup! The Fritz & Macziol Cup returns to Sportszentrum Kuhberg this weekend as the traditional preseason tournament hosted by ratiopharm Ulm comes back after taking one year off. Featuring a strong history of excellent preseason basketball action, this season the Fritz & Macziol Cup highlights ratiopharm Ulm's preseason schedule and tips off the home basketball season at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. ratiopharm Ulm unveils their new-look young team for the first time at home and this seasons tournament brings two terrific tests as Austrian champion WBC Raiffeisen Wels and ratiopharm Ulm's rival Walter Tigers Tubingen visit Kuhberg. Unfortunately, early this week, only days before the tournament, EclipseJet MG Amsterdam informed ratiopharm Ulm management they had pulled out of the tournament. As a replacement for the jerk-move from Amsterdam, Ulm welcomes the All-Stars, a team comprised of random free agent players currently in Europe who are still searching jobs. Despite the last minute changes, the Fritz & Macziol Cup is back with tremendous energy as the home basketball season tips off in Ulm with an exciting three game weekend!

Last season Wels won the Austrian Bundesliga topping traditional power Allianz Gmunden Swans as Head coach Raoul Korner and his Wels team captured their first championship. Key players returning to Wels include former UCONN PG Rickey Moore, hardworking forward Bruce Fields, crafty veteran guard Damir Lamesic and physical forward Thilo Klette. Key offseason additions include athletic wing Jason Conley and guard Trent Meacham. Bundesliga fans know Conley well from his successful seasons in Bonn after a terrific career at the University of Missouri. Meanwhile, Meacham enters his rookie season after a solid career at the University of Illinois. Wels will be a preseason favorite as a championship contender in the Austrian Bundesliga this season. ratiopharm Ulm meets arch rival Walter Tigers Tubingen Saturday night in the second day of Fritz & Macziol Cup preseason action at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm. More than any regular preseason game, every ratiopharm Ulm and Walter Tigers Tubingen matchup presents another grudge match for the two rivals. This season, former Ulm starting small forward Romeo Travis has signed in Tubingen and will add more fuel to the rivalry fire. Crossing the lines of the Ulm-Tubingen rivalry should provide added intensity from the Ulm fans toward Travis. Along with the signing of Romeo, Tubingen also made an outstanding moves adding experienced talented post player Alexander Nadjfeji, shooting post man Dane Watts, Daryl Hudson and Michael Jenkins. Returning for the Tigers include post man Ken Williams, guard Branislav Ratkovica, captain Jay Thomas and big man Jufan Geiger. For fans from both Ulm and Tubingen, the seasons first meeting between the two rival teams will be a highlight of the Fritz & Macziol Cup!

The team will be coached by former German National team player and Bundesliga head coach Uwe Sauer. ROBIN BENZING ADVANCES WITH GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM! ratiopharm Ulm forward Robin Benzing and the German National team have advanced to the next round in Poland at the 2009 European Championships. Robin played a major part as he drilled a clutch three icing Germany's win over defending champion Russia Tuesday night. Needing a result Wednesday, it was Jan Jagla's key three which helped Germany trim the deficit late game and advance by point differential. Next up for head coach Dirk Bauermann and his team will be a tough test against Greece Friday night 6:15pm. After and off day Saturday, Germany takes the floor to face Macedonia Sunday afternoon at 3:45pm before tipping off against Croatia Tuesday night 9pm.
