GMUNDEN SWANS EDGE ULM IN OVERTIME!

Deteri Mayes dropped 39 points with a fantastic shooting display helping his Gmunden Swans to an exciting 108-101 overtime victory in the nightcap of Fritz & Macziol Cup day one action at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  ratiopharm Ulm held a 45-34 lead late in the first half but clutch three point shots from the guests out of Gmunden sliced the lead to 51-47 at the half.  In the third quarter, Ulm built another double-digit lead 67-55 as Bryan Lucas and Jeff Gibbs powered the offensive attack.  But the veteran Austrian champs hung around and with 6 minutes remaining in the game pulled even at 81.  A frantic finish included several exciting plays, controversial calls and lead changes as both teams benefitted from the preseason experiences.  A defensive stop gave Ulm last shot and opportunity to win in regulation.  A Gmunden foul to give gave Ulm the ball with sideline inbound and 5 seconds to play.  Out of a timeout, Ulm'd Kyle Bailey got the shot the team wanted but the ball rimmed out sending the game to overtime tied at 92.  In overtime, the Swans received several big baskets and clutch free throws from Mayes while Ulm simply missed several open looks.  At the final buzzer Gmunden's 108-101 overtime win provided both squads with terrific preparation for the new year.  An entertaining offensive game, both teams shot 53% from the floor and Ulm outrebounded Gmunden 40-28.  The Swans sank 11 of 27 threes compared to Ulm's 7 for 24 mark and Gmunden made 27 for 34 (79%) from the foul line to Ulm's 20 of 28 (71%).  Bryan Lucas led Ulm's production with 21 points while Jeff Gibbs added 19 points 10 rebounds in the loss.  Captain Emeka Erege scored 14 points, Konrad Wysocki 13, EJ Gallup chipped in 12 points and Kyle Bailey 9 points and 7 rebounds for Ulm.  Aside from Mayes memorable 39 point performance which saw him sink 11 of 20 from the floor and 13 of 14 from the foul line, Matthias Mayer scored 17, Kevin Johnson 16 points 10 boards, Ian Boylan 14 and Peter Hutter 13 in the Swans terrific team effort.

NYMBURK SNUFFS SWANS IN CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE!

On the strength of a stingy team defense, Czech Republic Champion Nymburk earned their second straight Fritz & Macziol Cup win beating Austrian Champ Gmunden Swans 66-45 Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Gmunden started slow showing after-effects from Friday nights overtime extravaganza against Ulm.  Nymburk capitalized running to an early 25-14 advantage after one quarter.  Gmunden showed signs of life in a 15-13 second quarter, but the champs from Czech coasted into half leading 40-27.  The second half became a defensive oriented game.  Nymburk's impressive team defense forced several 24 second shot clock violations as the game went on. Nymburk outscored Gmunden 26-18 in the second half (14-9 in the third and 12-9 in the fourth).

ULM TOPS RIVAL TUBINGEN 83-78!

No matter the time of year, meeting a rival is meaningful.  When ratiopharm Ulm and Walter Tigers Tubingen square off,  from preseason to post season, every game adds to the special rivalry between the two teams.  Saturday nights Fritz & Macziol Cup matchup was no different.  Almost immediately, preseason went out the window as intensity level and focus from both rival teams reached nearly mid-season form.  Ulm started fast behind EJ Gallups corner three and Bryan Lucas' triple from the top of the key.  The offensive jump built a 12-5 Ulm lead.  The experienced Tubingen team responded with go-to scorer AJ Moye and the crafty inside game of Rasko Katic. The Tiger offensive attack enjoyed a 13-2 advantage in free throw attempts.  At the end of the first quarter, the guests held a 25-22 lead.  Again Gallup sparked the Ulm offense to start the second quarter and Ulm's 7-0 run regained a 29-25 advantage.  Surging ahead, Ulm built an 8 point lead at 41-33 before Tubingen fought back slicing the deficit to 48-46 as Moye banked in a tough, contested bucket before the buzzer.  In the second half, the hard-nosed, competitive action continued. With 4 minutes remaining in the third, Ulm held a 58-56 lead.  Unfortunately for Ulm, Tubingen stormed to a 12-0 run as Ulm's offense sputtered and defense softened.  Katic and Moye keyed the Tigers streak.  Ulm's bench players Dru Joyce, Sebastian Betz, Sean Finn along with team captain Emeka Erege energized the team and staged a tremendous comeback.  In the last minutes of the third, Ulm responded with 9-0 run as Joyce converted a breakaway layup and free throws and Erege's defensive effort turned the momentum of the game.  Trailing 68-67 heading into the fourth, Ulm's bench had helped the team fight back into the game.  Continuing on what the reserves had started, Jeff Gibbs second effort basket in the lane was followed by back to back EJ Gallup three pointers forcing a Tubingen timeout.  Since trailing by ten 68-58 late in the third, Ulm had exploded for a 17-0 run to lead 75-68.    Tubingen battled back behind Katic and Moye and trailing 75-72, Tiger defense forced a turnover leading to a Moye runout opportunity.  Ulm's Jeff Gibbs hustled back into the play attempting to challenge Moye's layup.  Athletically swooping under the rim at full speed, Moye scooped in a right hand reverse layup in transition as Gibbs fouled him with the body.  Unfortunately, Moye flew into the sponsor boards along the baseline and emerged with a bloody hand from a deep lasceration.  Leaving the game for the final few minutes, Moye's condition was examined at the Ulm hospital emergency room overnight.  Finishing out the game, Ulm PG Kyle Bailey managed the pressure well and Bryan Lucas sealed the surprising win with 5 points down the stretch.  One night after a competitive overtime loss to Gmunden, Ulm bounced back to take steps forward in the 83-78 win over rival Tubingen Saturday night.  Ulm's EJ Gallup topscored with 19 points including 4 of 9 from three point range while Bryan Lucas continued his excellent preseason with 15 points and 4 boards.  Jeff Gibbs posted another double double with 14 points 10 rebounds. New PG Kyle Bailey played a terrific all around game scoring 8 points with 5 assists and 4 rebounds while directing the Ulm attack flawlessly and effectively down the stretch.  Special mention goes to Emeka Erege and Dru Joyce who helped spark the third quarter comeback with defensive intensity and energy.  AJ Moye led Tubingen with 28 points before his hand injury and Rasko Katic was an impressive 9 for 9 from the floor scoring 23 points with 13 boards.

Kyle Bailey was excellent in directing the Ulm attack against Tubingen finishing with 8 points, 5 assists and 4 boards.
