FRITZ & MACZIOL CUP DAY TWO ROUND-UP!

ULM Falls to Bree 95-91 in OT!

ratiopharm Ulm and Belgian power Euphony Bree renewed their preseason rivalry with another classic preparation game which saw the guests claim a hard-fought 95-91 overtime victory over Ulm at Sportszentrum Kuhberg Saturday night in Day two of the Fritz & Macziol Cup.  A balanced Bree attack put 6 players in double figures led by scoring guard Kelvin Torbert's 20 which included several big buckets down the stretch and in OT.  Big man Reggie Bassette hit 7 of 9 shots before fouling out and Jim Cantamessa (14 points 7 boards), Jeff Horner (14 points), Lynard Stewart (13 points 8 rebounds) and Brian Lynch (11 points 5 boards), were also key for Bree in the win.

Jono finishes strong!  Levy led Ulm with 21 points including the clutch three pointer to tie the game forcing overtime.

An exciting game of runs, Ulm opened action strong bursting to an early lead and 25-17 advantage after one quarter.  Ulm's Jeff Gibbs announced his presence immediately, tipdunking home the first Ulm basket over several potential rebounders.  Bree switched to a zone defense and perplexed the Ulm offense eventually outscoring the hosts 21-5 in the second quarter to take a 38-30 lead into the halftime lockerroom.  Ulm made excellent halftime adjustments to turn the tide with a 35-13 advantage in the third quarter positioning themselves with a 65-51 lead after three.  But the veteran Bree team whiddled away at the lead behind big baskets from Torbert, Lynch and Stewart.  Holding an 80-77 lead with 11 seconds left, Ulm worked the ball to Jonathan Levy who buried a right corner three to tie the score sending this preseason thriller into overtime.  In the extra stanza, shooting big man Jim Cantamessa found the deep corner to bury 2 three balls which sparked Bree to a slight lead.  Ulm's OT performance was preseason-like down the stretch, but the team worked extremely hard and showed excellent signs of teamwork and execution.  Jonathan Levy led Ulm scoring with 21 points including 4 big threes in the second half.  Konrad Wysocki added 11 points and Jeff Gibbs contributed 10 points and a team best 7 boards.  Ulm Head Coach Mike Taylor rotated players freely and got positive contributions from every member of the team.  Ulm wraps up the Fritz & Macziol Cup Sunday afternoon with a meeting with 2.Bundesliga South favorite Chemnitz 99ers.  With a chance to capture the tournament championship outright, Bree meets Tubingen.

Jeff Gibbs powered to 10 points 7 rebounds against Bree!
