ULM'S BUSY FREE WEEKEND!
ratiopharm Ulm tops Gmunden Swans 84-65 in Scrimmage!
Friday evening the top team from the Austrian Bundesliga, first place Gmunden Swans, traveled to Ulm for an unofficial scrimmage game against ratiopharm Ulm at Sportszentrum Kuhberg. Looking to maintain game-rhythm and stay sharp, both teams were pleased to compete against a quality opponent and fill the free weekend. Earning a bye with an outstanding regular season in Austria, Gmunden is poised to make another championship run in their playoffs. Meanwhile, ratiopharm Ulm was excited for an exhibition which kept the team sharp over a Bundesliga open week while the German Cup Top Four Tournament took place at ColorLine Arena in Hamburg.

EJ Gallup, here in action against Karlsruhe, hit four three pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 18 points in ratiopharm Ulm's scrimmage win Friday night over Austrian Champion Gmunden Swans.
Friday's action opened with strong Ulm defense allowing them to build an early lead. Strong rebounding and transition play gave the hosts opportunities in the openeing moments. Jeff Gibbs and former Austrian Center of the Year Bryan Lucas made an impact early, Gibbs from the inside and Lucas from out. Falling behind early, the Swans fought their way back by the end of the first quarter. Wing Ian Boylan sank several tough one on one pull up shots giving Gmunden a spark. Playing the entire 12 man roster, ratiopharm Ulm also integrated point guard Jeb Ivey, a player in Ulm for a tryout. Rotating the bench frequently, Ulm kept players fresh and got everyone involved. Both teams could be pleased with the intensity level and competitiveness displayed considering the game was simply a scrimmage. At the end of the first half, ratiopharm Ulm held a 37-30 lead.
Making a strong run to 21-12 start the second half, ratiopharm Ulm built their lead to 58-42 in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Jeff Gibbs powered his way to buckets in the paint and Jonathan Levy capped several fast breaks with layups and a terrific alley-oop slam. A deep Bryan Lucas three ball from the right wing also highlighted Ulm's run. But behind Boylan and active Blake Hamilton, Gmunden battled back outscoring Ulm 8-3 to end the third. Taking a 63-50 lead into the fourth, the final ten minutes became the EJ Gallup show --- after Gmunden cut the deficit to 10, the skillful Ulm G sank 4 threes to spark hsi team and put the game away. As the final buzzer sounded, ratiopharm Ulm had won the scrimmage 84-65. Just as important, the team had fun. Jeff Gibbs led Ulm scoring with 19 points while EJ Gallup added 18, Jonathan Levy 14 and Bryan Lucas 12. Certainly, Ulm accomplished their goals of maintaining "Game-Rhythm" and "Staying sharp".
