YES!

CITIES OF ULM AND NEU ULM APPROVE NEW ARENA PROJECT!

Wednesday night in Ulm, the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm voted for a new Arena to be built at the Neu Ulm Volksfestplatz in a project that benefits the entire Ulm region building the new home for ratiopharm Ulm basketball.  After decades of basketball tradition played in Sportszentrum Kuhberg, a new era was tipped off Wednesday November 11th, 2009 with the approval of the 'Multifunktionshalle'.  For ratiopharm Ulm basketball, the new arena raises the ceiling of potential for the organization and allows tremendous room for development and growth.  Of all the victories on the basketball floor, Wednesday night's 'YES' vote from the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm is one of the most important steps for the future of Bundesliga basketball on the Donau.

Working together for the region, the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm have come together in Ulm's Arena project.  Calculating a cost of 27.6 million Euro, two-thirds of the cost (18.4mil) will be responsible for Ulm and (9.2mil) will be from Neu Ulm. Working with a seating capacity of 5,500, several entertainment suites and lounges will be included in the project.  The new Arena is planned at the Neu-Ulm 'Volksfest platz' with a grand opening set for December 6th, 2011 which is St Nicholas Day in Germany.

ratiopharm Ulm celebrated the positive vote from the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm as the team quietly watched proceedings in Ulm.

Meeting in downtown Ulm, Ulm Oberbürgermeister Ivo Gönner and Neu Ulm Oberbürgermeister Gerold Noerenberg guided a lengthy discussion lasting well beyond expected time.  After regular evening practice, ratiopharm Ulm's team planned a party at downtown CuBar but with the extended discussion, the team was able to attend the last 30 minutes of the meeting.  Standing quietly in the back observing the German political meeting, player, coaches and staff of ratiopharm Ulm anxiously awaited the evening vote.  Just after 9:30pm German time, the cities went to work.  Ulm recorded 27 YES votes against 13 NO votes while Neu Ulm counted 28 YES votes to only 12 NO.  After years of hardwork, Ulm and Neu Ulm's 'multifunktionshalle project' passed with a resoundingly positive voting.

Milestones in the Arena project lead up to this historical decision for the Ulm region.  First, in the summer of 2005, The institute for sport site consultation (gmbh IFS) generated a feasibility study determining possibilities for a new Arena.  In the summer of 2007, the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm agreed on the location at the Neu Ulm Volksfestplatz.  Later in March 2008 the cities conclude a market reconnaissance procedure. The Multifunktionshalle Ulm/newly-Ulm gmbh (MFH gmbh) was established. In December 2008, plans became public and the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm began actively searching a firm to build the new Arena.  Seven qualified applicants bid for the project. In April 2009, the MFH gmbh reduced the applicants to three and negotiation conversations intensified.  Finally, 11.11.2009 at 9:40pm, Ulm and newly Ulm selected the firm Max Bögl for the building of the Multifunktionshalle.

ratiopharm Ulm management led by Thomas Stoll and Andreas Oettel played a major role in the entire process and deserve recognition for their tremendous efforts over years of work in the push for a new Arena.  Many key political figures within the cities of Ulm and Neu Ulm also played important roles in the effort for the new Arena as well.  Certainly, ratiopharm Ulm basketball is extremely thankful for the big assist from politicians in both Ulm and Neu Ulm who made this success possible.  While the new Arena is about more than basketball, ratiopharm Ulm will be a featured tenant in their new home.
