ULM HOSTS PADERBORN!

ratiopharm Ulm vs Paderborn Baskets

Saturday March 27, 2010    7pm

Sportszentrum Kuhberg     Ulm, Germany

ratiopharm Ulm returns to action Saturday night when they host Paderborn baskets for a 7pm tip at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.  Focused for a strong performance, ratiopharm Ulm looks to avenge their disappointing road loss in Paderborn back in November as they work to finish the season strong. Ulm must overcome personnel issues as the team faces injuries and other off-court challenges prior to hosting Paderborn this weekend.

Over the last three seasons, Ulm and Paderborn have followed a similar path.  With both teams winning their 2.Bundesliga championships under the old North - South format in 2005-2006, ratiopharm Ulm and Paderborn have established themselves in the Bundesliga over the past three seasons.  Last year, both teams made the playoffs and were eliminated after hardfought first round series.  This season has been challenging for both Ulm and Paderborn as both teams have worked through roster changes and fresh new faces.  Unfortunately for Paderborn, their struggles have backed them into a corner for their Bundesliga survival as the team fights against relegation in the 'abstiegskampf'.  Saturday night when Paderborn visits Ulm, they will be playing for their Bundesliga lives.

Both Ulm and Paderborn celebrated the 'Aufstieg' in the same season of 2005-2006 as Ulm won the 2.Bundesliga South and Paderborn took the 2.Bundesliga North.  While Ulm has earned 10 victories entering Saturday's matchup, Paderborn can claim only five and remain in the Bundesliga basement.  Roster changes and coaching changes throughout the season in Paderborn signify a squad willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the Bundesliga and Saturday night Sportszentrum Kuhberg will see a Paderborn team desperately needing a win.

ratiopharm Ulm power forward Christian Burns

Paderborn's 2009-2010 season tipped off with a win as they won 85-79 in Hagen.  Unfortunately for Paderborn, the team struggled to 9 straight losses before ratiopharm Ulm came to town.  Winless in Sportszentrum Maspernplatz, Ulm struggled through a disappointing road performance in their November loss at Paderborn.  After topping Ulm, Paderborn dropped back to back games before picking up another victory beating MBC 75-70 December 13th, 2009.  Paderborn dropped three straight games before edging Dusseldorf 65-64 January 6th but the team struggled through a six game losing streak and have gone 1-9 since.  Certainly, Ulm is focused to use their home court advantage Saturday night as they work to avenge their early season road loss against Paderborn.

ratiopharm Ulm guard Rocky Trice

Paderborn has almost completely revamped their roster.  Leading the teams attack in the backcourt, skillful guard Malik Moore returned to Paderborn after a successful season in Pro A with MBC.  A quick, attacking combo guard, Moore is a terrific scorer and currently leads Paderborn averaging 11.9ppg 2.9reb 3.4ast.  Point guard duties are shared between crafty DeAndre Haynes and skilled young German playmaker Nicolai Simon.  A rookie from Kent State, Haynes has produced 9.9ppg with 2.9reb and 1.9ast as a leader for Paderborn.  Meanwhile, Simon works tirelessly on defense and has given his team with 6ppg and 81% from the foul line.  On the wing, Paderborn features small forward Sefton Barrett who averages 10.6ppg 3.7reb 27% threes with an inside-out offensive game.  Rookie guard Lawrence Borha has made the transition from the University of Utah to Paderborn and currently provides 3.7ppg 1.2reb 29% three point shooting.  German wing Daniel Lieneke is playing more minutes on the perimeter this season as well.  In the post, Paderborn features Kevin Langford (10.6ppg 3.7reb 33% threes) and Matt Terwilliger (7.9ppg 5.7reb 40% threes).  Langford, a rookie from TCU, has a skillful post game and plays with energy in the paint.  Terwilliger could be the most improved player on Paderborn's team as he has stepped up his production tremendously.  Most impressive has been Terwilliger's three point shooting touch.  German post man Robert Oehle brings a physical, competitive presence to the frontcourt as well.  Recently, Paderborn added veteran combo guard Lashon Sheffield to their roster for depth and backcourt versatility.

ratiopharm Ulm's Lee Humphrey

Overall in head to head meetings since the two teams moved into the Bundesliga, Ulm has captured 3 wins over Paderborn while Paderborn has topped Ulm 5 times.  This weekends meeting finds Paderborn working to survive and stay in the Bundesliga while ratiopharm Ulm looks to finish the season strong, build for the future and evaluate their team.

Earlier this season in Paderborn, ratiopharm Ulm's problems in Paderborn continued as Ulm's winless streak in Sportszentrum Maspernplatz stretched to four seasons in a 94-73 road loss Saturday night November 28th, 2009.

Last season 2008-2009, Ulm and Paderborn split a pair of games with each team winning on their home floor.  In the last meeting with Paderborn, ratiopharm Ulm earned a hardfought 77-73 'Kampfensieg' over Paderborn Saturday night April 25th, 2009 at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  In a physical, playoff-style game, ratiopharm Ulm limited Paderborn to 37% shooting and battled until a 10-2 fourth quarter run completed the comeback in the hardfought victory.  Lee Humphrey led Ulm's attack with 17 points in the win.  The physical and competitive 'kampfensieg' played out as perfect preparation for the post season as ratiopharm Ulm earned their 20th win.

Earlier last season, Ulm traveled to Paderborn for a game January 7th, 2009.  With wintry conditions outside, negative ten degrees celcius and powdery snow covered the north central German city of Paderborn the first week after new year.  Just as cold in their first game of the new year, ratiopharm Ulm shot a season low 36% from the floor and fell victim to a late game-breaking run that pushed host Paderborn Baskets to an 82-66 Bundesliga win Wednesday night January 7th, 2009 at Sportszentrum Maspernplatz.

Ulm post man Coleman Collins

Paderborn's new head coach, Dirk Happe replaced Olaf Stolz the former National team coach for Germany's womens team.  Stolz was relieved of his coaching duties due to the struggling season but his hardwork and efforts in Paderborn were appreciated.  After successful work in Rhondorf, Stolz aimed for success in the top German league, the Beko Bundesliga. Unfortunately for Stolz and Paderborn, the team reacted to their danger of relegation and made the move.

ratiopharm Ulm center Kevin Martin

Ulm's lineup is not at full strength with injuries to Sebastian Betz and Coleman Collins along with a personal situation with shooting guard Lee Humphrey.  Reinjuring his adductor, Basti Betz was ruled out for the season by Ulm medical staff earlier this week.  Along with Basti missing this weekends game, talented big man Coleman Collins remains a big question mart for this weekends Paderborn game. Although Coleman made excellent progress in rehabilitating his foot injury suffered Sunday in Braunschweg, the talented forward will be a game-time decision against Paderborn.  Finally, captain Lee Humphrey flew home to the USA for a family suituaion.  Lee is scheduled to return Friday for practice and is expected to be ready to play Saturday.  One positive from the personnel issues in Ulm has been the performance of young players such as Michael and Andreas Wenzel, Philip Vojkovic and Nemanja Kekic who took on bigger roles in practices throughout the week.

Saturday night, ratiopharm Ulm aims for their next win at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.  An expected sellout crowd will be on hand to support their Ulm team as the season heads into the final five weeks.  ratiopharm Ulm continues to evaluate their roster as the team focuses to finish strong for each other --- the next step in that direction takes place Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg against Paderborn.
