Ulm Edges Ludwigsburg in Preseason Game!
ratiopharm Ulm and EnBW Ludwigsburg met Wednesday night at Ulm University Gym North with the expected usual result --- a hardfought rivalry game. Playing in Ulm for the first time this preseason, ratiopharm Ulm still was unable to play at home due to renovations and construction to Sportszentrum Kuhberg. After Ulm opened a 23-14 lead after one quarter, preseason showed in the form of missed layups for Ulm as Ludwigsburg battled back to trim Ulm's halftime lead to 37-33. In the first half, Ulm shot 32% from the floor and hit only 10 of 24 shots in the paint. Head Coach Rick Stafford and his Ludwigsburg team capitalized on Ulm's preseason offensive execution to build a third quarter lead before Ulm's Keith Triplett sparked his team with outstanding defensive ball pressure and several steals. At the end of three, Ludwigsburg led by one 53-52. Brandon Woudstra and Domonic Jones made several big plays for the guests in their strong third quarter surge. Ulm's Romeo Travis converted several clutch baskets down the stretch in the fourth quarter and Jeff Gibbs swatted a Ludwigsburg shot from the left corner out of bounds as a highlight of Ulm's win. With the offense not finding a rhythm, Ulm's defense earned the win forcing 23 Ludwigsburg turnovers with presses and ballpressure. Romeo Travis led Ulm's offensive production with 18 points in the win while Jeff Gibbs added 13 points 9 rebounds and Dan Fitzgerald added 10 points 5 boards. Michael Schroeder chipped in 8 points 4 rebounds along with physical defensive effort. Ulm shot 37% from the floor and 19 of 29 (65%) from the foul line while outrebounding Ludwigsburg 34-33. Brandon Woudstra and Domonic Jones shared topscoring honors for Ludwigsburg with 17 points apiece while Dane Watts added 10 points 7 boards. Both teams played without starting point guards as Ulm's Dru Joyce sat out to rest a minor foot injury after 8 minutes of action and Ludwigsburg's Brian Jones also missed the game resting a minor injury. For Ulm, rookie point guard Per Gunther was once again impressive as he gained valuable experience playing key minutes as Ulm's primary point guard. Both teams were able to take many positives from the action and focus on areas to improve before Bundesliga season tip off in two weeks. After a practice day Thursday, ratiopharm Ulm travels to Oostende Belgium Friday for the Base Cup Tournament this weekend featuring ratiopharm Ulm, Base Oostende, Deutsche Bank Skyliners and Antwerp Giants.
