Ulm Tops Tubingen Preseason Finale!

ratiopharm Ulm completed their 2009 preseason with an exciting 84-81 road win over rival Walter Tigers Tubingen Friday night at Uhlandhalle in Tubingen.  Coleman Collins was in top form scoring a game high 25 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists in the win while Rocky Trice hit several clutch baskets down the stretch as part of his excellent 21 point 7 rebound performance for Ulm.  Along with the effort of Collins and Trice, rookie forward Robin Benzing added 14 points and team captain Lee Humphrey returned to action hitting 4 threes for 12 points 3 assists.

Playing without injured players Per Gunther and Christian Burns, ratiopharm Ulm made their first appearance at Uhlandhalle since the 2003-2004 2.Bundesliga South season and classic overtime game.  While Friday's preseason finale was meaningful, the game was also unusal as the Uhlandhalle scoreboard malfunctioned before the game and would not work forcing the scorers table to manually announce the time and score.

Despite flu-sickness, ratiopharm Ulm's Rocky Trice finishes this fast break with a slam dunk in Friday's preseason game at Uhlandhalle in Tubingen.  Rocky hit several big baskets as part of his 21 point 7 rebound night.

Ulm started fast as rookie forward Robin Benzing came out on fire hitting back to back jump shots before adding a three pointer from the left wing that pushed Ulm to a 9-3 lead.  Robin scored 7 points in the first quarter but was slowed by mid-quarter foul trouble.  Ulm finished the first quarter with a 16-11 lead.  Extending their advantage to double-digits by the 5 minute mark of the second, Ulm held a 28-18 lead behind hot three point shooting from captain Lee Humphrey who buried four first half threes.  Maintaining their margin, Ulm took a 38-28 lead into the halftime lockerroom.

After missing the last two preseason games, ratiopharm Ulm captain Lee Humphrey returned to action helping his team to a strong first half.  Here, Lee buries a corner three in Ulm's second quarter run.

The Tigers responded early in the third quarter making an 8-0 run that trimmed the Ulm lead to 38-33.  Ulm's Rocky Trice hit back to back tough baskets keeping Ulm ahead.  With five minutes in the third, Ulm led 45-42.  Tubingen ralled and their momentum grew, but Ulm held a 57-53 lead after three. Former Ulm forward Romeo Travis keyed the Tiger comeback producing 17 points through 3 quarters.

As the fourth quarter began, Ulm maintained their slim lead as Tubingen continued their comeback.  Finally, with just over 4 minutes remaining, Tubingen tied the score at 68 forcing an Ulm timeout.  But a Robin Benzing three and Rocky Trice basket sparked Ulm's attack.  Down the stretch, Coleman Collins made plays producing 13 points in the fourth quarter.  While Coleman powered the attack, Ulm's Rocky Trice hit big baskets including a key foul-line pull-up jumper with under one minute to play.  Ulm's Sebastian Betz and Kevin Kanaskie finished the game at the foul line stretching Ulm's lead to 84-78 with 2 seconds to play but Tubingen's Michael Jenkins sank a cosmetic halfcourt shot at the buzzer setting the final score at 84-81.

In the game, ratiopharm Ulm shot 53% from the floor making 8 of 16 threes and 16 of 19 free throws (84%).  Tubingen outrebounded Ulm 31-29 .  The Tigers hit 51% from the floor including 5 of 26 threes (19%) and 12 of 18 free throws (67%).  Former Ulm forward Romeo Travis paced the Tubingen attack with 22 points 8 rebounds while Ken Williams chipped in 12 points 8 rebounds and Alexander Nadjfeji finished with 11 points 7 boards.

Completing their 2009 preseason, ratiopharm Ulm will enjoy a weekend free before returning to practice Monday in anticipation for Friday October 9th's season opener against Telekom Baskets Bonn 7pm at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.

Despite missing the game due to an ankle injury, ratiopharm Ulm forward Christian Burns had fun with Ulm fans Friday night in Tubingen.
