Unfortunately for Ulm, pregame warmups provided a surprise and extra work for the teams excellent physio Andi Lacher. Unexpectedly, after the teams pregame pep talk, Jeff Gibbs tweaked his back and missed the first part of warmups while Andi treated the All Star. At the time, Ulm prepared for the possibility of playing without Jeff. But midway through warmups, Gibbs trotted through the tunnel and onto the floor to get ready. Unfortunately, on his way onto the floor, Jeff passed Ulm wing Sebastian Betz who was on his way back to the lockerroom after tweaking his back jumping up in layup lines. While Jeff was able to play, Basti's back problem kept him out of the game and inactive.

After a Trier timeout, the hosts responded. Former Ulm center Maksym Shtein sparked a second quarter run finishing basket cuts for easy buckets. Ulm's lackadazical offensive play resulted in a perimeter oriented offense as the team settled for jumpshots and did not attack in the post. When Trier's Derek Raivio poked loose a midcourt steal and drove in for a breakaway bucket, Trier regained the lead Ulm called for a timeout to discuss their attention to detail and execution. But as Ulm players tried to turn it on, their rhythm was off. Jeff Gibbs worked to the middle and shot a fadeaway in the lane over former teammate Maksym Shtein. At the half, Ulm and Trier were even at 32 but Ulm's energy level was low and the teams attention to detail was dull. After Friday's fantsatic home win over Ludwigsburg, a game which saw Ulm play energized team defense, dominate the boards and hit 17 threes, Sunday's performance was a natural let down of a young team. Keeping things positive and staying patient with the team, Ulm's halftime discussion focused more on being the team to make the run in the second half than the first twenty minutes of action. Working to help the players understand about rising to the immediate challenge at hand and forget about last result positive or negative, Ulm players did everything they could to refocus themselves and find better energy in the second half.

Trier's George Evans fired a perfect post reaction pass to Copeland who sank an energizing three pointer giving Trier a 35-32 lead. Gibbs responded with an offensive rebound put-back to pull Ulm within 35-34. But on Trier's next possession, Norman Richardson snuck backdoor for an easy layup after another Ulm defensive breakdown. Soon after, a mishandled handoff was turned over as Derek Raivio did it again --- breaking away for another uncontested layup. Stopping the Trier run with a timeout, Ulm attempted to refocus before the game got away. Unfortunately out of the timeout, Ulm's Romeo Travis missed an open right corner three and back to back turnovers by Jeff Gibbs in the led to transition opportunities for Trier. In all, the 14-2 Trier run gave the hosts a 46-34 lead. Working to find a combination that could spark a counter-run, Ulm tried everything. Ulm's efforts to create a run were shortfused by simple defensive mistakes that led to easy Trier baskets. As the Ulm players tried to turn it on, the faced the wave of Trier momentum.
